Viadana is a city in the Lombardy.

To know

In Lower Lombard, on the river Po, it shares with the neighboring one Casalmaggiore the role of co-capital of the interprovincial area known as Casalasco - Viadanese, recently Oglio Po, which includes the municipalities of the province of Cremona and the province of Mantua which are found precisely between the two rivers. Within its own province of Mantua, Viadana is the capital of the area Viadanese.

Geographical notes

Located on the left bank of the river Po, at the foot of the embankment beyond which a vast floodplain extends, Viadana is an important commercial and industrial center, as well as agricultural (in the northern part of the municipal area), in the province of Mantua, the where the Mantuan borders with Casalmaggiore (CR) and its territory (Casalasco) and with the province of Reggio Emilia on the opposite bank of the Po.

Background

Populated since prehistoric times and then in Roman times, both periods that have left traces with numerous archaeological finds, Viadana had a first urban organization in the 10th century, becoming a county of Parma Suppone, which was replaced by the Este family in 972. He was a member of the Committee of Brescia, and ecclesiastically it was always subject to the episcopal curia of CremonaIn 1158 the Emperor Frederick I assigned the lordship to the Cremonese family of the Cavalcabò, who in 1352 issued the Statutes which remained in force until the early nineteenth century.

The Gonzagas entered the life of the city in 1415, when it became subject to Gian Francesco Gonzaga, fifth Captain of the People of Mantua, a city to which it remained always linked, except for a short period before the unification of Italy. Emperor Charles V granted the title of Duke of Mantua to the Marquis Federico II Gonzaga, and at the same time that of Marquis of Viadana. Thus it was that the city became one State autonomous within the Gonzaga possessions. The Marquisate of Viadana, belonging to the main branch of the dynasty, never had a mint, but always enjoyed considerable autonomy which ended with the fall of the Gonzagas in 1708 and its annexation to the House of Austria. In 1771 the Marquisate was suppressed and aggregated to the Austrian Lombardy. From 1787 to 1797 he was part of the Casalmaggiore Province, then of the province of Cremona until 1868, when all the territories on the right bank of the Po once belonging to the Gonzagas were aggregated to the province of Mantua, reunited with Italy after the Third War of Independence.

In the post-war period, Viadana experienced a great development due to the establishment of numerous craft activities (production of brooms and brushes) which quickly turned into industries. Other large settlements in the wood sector decree its transition from a substantially agricultural center to an industrial center ofOglio Po, and a major center of reference in the area together with the neighboring one Casalmaggiore. On January 16, 1995 the President of the Republic awarded Viadana the title of City.
