Geographical notes

In the fertile Po valley north of Oglio, near the Churches, Acquanegra is 7 km from Buttonhole, 18 from Castel Goffredo, 25 from Casalmaggiore, 31 from Mantua, 37 from Cremona, 50 from Parma.

Background

The territory has given finds of prehistoric settlements, which were followed by Roman settlements, a time when the first organized nucleus was formed. However, the area, marshy and unhealthy, did not allow for a great housing development until the arrival of the Benedictine monks gave way to the rehabilitation works of the territory which was gradually reclaimed from the waters that were regulated and regulated.

The reclamation gave fertile land to agricultural exploitation; the Benedictines enriched and enlarged the convent (no longer existing) which became together with those of Leno and of San Benedetto Po one of the most powerful and richest in the central Po area. The abbey of San Tommaso remains, although profoundly transformed, to testify the importance of the monastic settlement.

In the early Middle Ages the village was a free municipality and opposed the claims of possession of the Holy Roman Empire. A tradition states that in the church of San Zenone di Mosio, now a hamlet of Acquanegra, the second league of Lombard municipalities was created; others, on the other hand, place the event in a center in the Verona area.

In the thirteenth century it passed under the jurisdiction of Brescia to become then in the fifteenth century the domain of the Gonzagas, a family whose fate followed. Incorporated in Lombardo Veneto, it eventually merged into the kingdom of Italy.

What see

Interior of St. Thomas the Apostle
  • 1 Church of San Tommaso Apostolo. The building is a Romanesque monastic church. Much of the perimeter walls are original, but the façade, the side chapels, the bell tower and the apse area are the result of subsequent reworkings. The church, therefore, has a particularly modified interior and exterior compared to the facies of the time of construction. The external walls retain interventions by opus spicatum.
Some external elements have been compared with the churches of S. Fiorentino in Nuvolato Quistello, of S. Lorenzo a Pegognaga, of S. Benedetto a Gonzaga; therefore the Romanesque building of Acquanegra could be close to that series of Mantuan Romanesque places of worship, born during the season of Gregorian Reform of Pope Gregory VII supported by Matilda di Canossa - late 11th - early 12th century -.
The interior is a Latin cross with three naves, with a protruding transept. The current vaults, however, built later, prevent the reading of the environment in its ancient aspect. The roof was most likely decorated with trusses, with support brackets, still visible in the attic. The central nave communicates with the lateral ones through arches supported by brick pillars, built in a sack, which rest on marble elements and are crowned by notched cube capitals. At the cross there are four arches that open onto the apse, the nave and the transept; those leading into the transept are lower than the others. Elements of the crypt are visible through the entrance, located on the left at the single polygonal pillar. The building, oriented, due to the characteristics highlighted, can be dated to the end of the 11th century: a dating that coincides with the written documentation on the monastery.
The deep presbytery and the wide transept also reveal the function of church for the monks that St. Thomas housed; the abbey complex almost certainly developed on the southern side of the current building.
Frescoes
The figures represented in the nave are forty-four; through the analysis of the names written next to them or through the identification of the biblical verses written on the scrolls they show, it was possible to identify the following characters: Malachi, Zephaniah, Nahum, Micah, Judas Maccabee, Judith. It has also been noted that their placement in series follows the sequence of biblical texts and represents, in order, the texts of the Old Testament.
In the continuous narration, above the arches of the left wall for those who enter the story of the lion of San Girolamo is represented, unjustly accused of having eaten a donkey entrusted to him. Above the arches of the right wall for those who enter the story of Balaam and the donkey is depicted. On the counter façade, the Last Judgment is depicted.
The triumphal arch most likely depicts scenes from Genesis: the creation of Adam and Eve, the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Earthly Paradise and their work. On the external arch of the presbytery, the prophet Elijah who is kidnapped into heaven, and Enoch's ascent to heaven. The representations on the external arch and on the north wall of the presbytery are not identifiable.
The Romanesque frescoes are now only partially visible: the ancient falls of plaster, the insertion of the vaults, the windows, the organ and the subsequent drafting of plaster made the whole fragmentary. In terms of technique and colors, they can be divided into two cycles: an older one, on the triumphal arch and on the external arch of the presbytery, and another immediately following one, comprising the hall of the central nave.
The first cycle is characterized by a dry, rapid execution technique, spread directly on the wall, without guide marks, apart from the compass marks for the halos. The effect is of great freshness, but reading is difficult because the frescoes are now hardly visible, and it is not always easy to understand the iconography. The style, however, is Lombard, with evident archaisms.
The other cycle of the church nave and the counter-façade is slightly later. The elements are typical of the Lombard style with German and Byzantine influences.
Comparisons were also made with the frescoes of the Benedictine Basilica of Sant'Angelo in Formis, of S. Pietro and S. Calocero in Civate, of the baptistery of Concordia Sagittaria, of S. Antonino a Piacenza, of the refectory of Nonantola, of S. Severo a Bardolino and the parish church of Fossacaprara a Casalmaggiore. However, the two cycles always appear to refer to the Lombard codex, and can be dated to the first quarter of the 12th century.
