To know
Known throughout the world for the production of women's socks - for this reason it is named "City of the stocking" - Castel Goffredo is part of the Textile District No. 6 of the provinces of Mantua is Brescia, where over 250 industrial and artisanal companies operate.The city was an autonomous fief from 1444 to 1602 (Marquisate of Castel Goffredo) and one of the capitals of the Gonzaga states. In 1511 the marquis Aloisio Gonzaga gave rise to the cadet branch of the Gonzaga of Castel Goffredo, extinct in 1593 and, under its domination, the village became an important one fortress city, protected by seven towers and surrounded by a defense moat; in the eighteenth century the demolition of the walls began. In the years of 1848 Castel Goffredo was the anti-Austrian conspiratorial center of the Alto Mantovano and counted the presence of numerous patriots, headed by the castellan Giovanni Acerbi, who will later become steward of the One thousand of Garibaldi. In 1859 it was the theater of the battle of Solferino.
Since 1987 he has been part of the 100 municipalities of little big Italy. It acquired the title of city in 2002 and is the eighth most populous municipality in the province of Mantua. It is among the common promoters of the "Ecomuseum between the Churches, Tartaro and Osone". Castel Goffredo participates with its monuments from 2017 to Wiki Loves Monuments, organized by Wikimedia Italy. In July 2020 he received the recognition of City that reads 2020-2021.
Geographical notes

The inhabited area rises in the Alto Mantovano, on the border with the province of Brescia, in the area at the foot of the morainic hills of Garda, from which it is about 25 km.
Characteristic of the area is the presence of fountains and underground water resources, probably fed also due to the infiltration of the waters of the Lake Garda through the moraine reliefs. Interesting for the natural microenvironment It is the area located in the Profondi and Perosso hamlets, north of the capital, rich in vegetation, allowing the life of crayfish and the survival of numerous water birds. The presence of resurgences creates the suitable environmental conditions for the development of a vegetation of aquatic plants such as watercress, wild iris, water lilies, water ranunculus and duckweed called ranina, which covers the bottom of the fountain.
Numerous streams and streams, some of significant naturalistic-environmental value, run through the municipal area. Between these:
- the stream Tartar (or Tartaro Fabrezza) was born in the hamlet of Lame di Carpenedolo, crosses the town of Castel Goffredo from north to south, passes through Casaloldo, Mariana Mantovana, Redundant is Marcaria and flows into the Oglio river. Its origin is very ancient and there is evidence as early as 1145 in a bull of Pope Eugene III, where theoratory of San Michele, which stood near the stream. The watercourse was also mentioned by the storyteller Matteo Bandello, guest from 1538 to 1541 of the Marquis of Castel Goffredo Aloisio Gonzaga;
- the stream Escape (or Seriola Fuga) was born north of Castel Goffredo in Profondi and runs through the west of the city, passing through Casaloldo and leads to Mosio in the Oglio river. This river once formed the defensive bulwark of Castel Goffredo;
- the Tartarello it was born on the northern outskirts of the city and crosses the entire inhabited center and then flows into the Escape. In the 15th century it crossed, partially uncovered, Piazza dell'Olmo (now Mazzini square). It has almost completely disappeared, with the exception of the initial part where the canalization is still visible;
- the stream Osone was born in the territory of Castel Goffredo, runs through the town of San Martino Gusnago, wets Castellucchio and flows into the Mincio in the vicinity of Thank you of Curtatone;
- there Seriola Gozzolina was born in the territory of Castiglione delle Stiviere and runs through the north-east area of Castel Goffredo;
- there Seriola Piubega it was born in the hamlet of Lame di Carpenedolo and runs through the north-east area of Castel Goffredo.

On the origin of the toponym Castel Goffredo there are several hypotheses. Composed of castrum, fortification, and an unspecified "Goffredo" (from the Germanic Gottfried meaning "at peace with God"), on which many scholars have tried to find its precise meaning. An imperial decree of 1164 by Federico Barbarossa identifies Castel Goffredo as follows: Curtem de Runco Sigifredi cum castro et ecclesia, thus meaning that the second part of the name is derived from Sigifredi.
In this article, attention has already been paid to the importance of Castel Goffredo as a Marquisate (1444-1602), but the history of this city is much older and one could say - rightly - millenary.
The first human settlements date back to the Bronze Age (1800-1200 BC); subsequently the territory was inhabited in the Etruscan and Roman times. In the Middle Ages (from 800 to 1115), Castel Goffredo belonged to the County of Brescia and was called Castrum Vifredi. In 1337, with the rise to power of the Gonzaga on the city of Mantua, the country asked for their protection and was aggregated. Then took over the Visconti, again the Gonzagas and the Republic of Venice. From 1441 it passed definitively to the lords of Mantua and remained there until 1708.
At the beginning of the 16th century, this land was the capital of a small Gonzaga state, the Marquisate of Castel Goffredo. In their sumptuous court, the lords loved to surround themselves with illustrious characters, such as writers Matteo Bandello, Lucrezia Gonzaga is Pietro Aretino and diplomats Cesare Fregoso is Antonio Rincon. In 1516 the emperor passed through Castel Goffredo Maximilian I of Habsburg while pursuing the French troops. In 1543 another emperor, Charles V, stayed in Castel Goffredo, guest of Aloisio Gonzaga, and obtained the keys of the fortress. In 1592 the second Marquis was assassinated, Alfonso Gonzaga, who had his nephew as principal Rodolfo, in turn killed on January 3, 1593. In 1602, Castel Goffredo lost its autonomy: aggregated to the Duchy of Mantua its fate followed, passing under Austrian domination (1707) and, in 1859, becoming part of the Kingdom of Italy.
In the years of 1848 Castel Goffredo was the anti-Austrian conspiratorial center of theAlto Mantovano related to Martyrs of Belfiore and counted the presence of numerous patriots, headed by the castellan Giovanni Acerbi, who will later become steward of the One thousand of Garibaldi. In 1859 the territory of Castel Goffredo was the theater of the war of the battle of Solferino.

In 1846 Castel Goffredo already counted on its territory three spinning mills and four spinning machines, which represented the embryo of a future Textile district. The beginnings of its industrialization date back to 1925, when the first hosiery factory, il NO.E.MI., which initially produced cotton and later silk socks. This company started its activity thanks to the import from Germany of some mechanical looms (type "Cotton") which allowed the start of the production of hosiery with semi-industrial systems. From this first experience, and thanks to the initiative of some former workers who had worked at hosiery, in the fifties the first artisan hosiery workshops and the first yarn manufacturing company arose, which over the years were transformed into large textile companies. In the last decade there has been, in part, the diversification of production towards the creation of lingerie. In the eighties the production of headlights and projectors for theaters, discos and monument lighting developed greatly, with various companies exporting all over the world.
Since 1993 it has been twinned with Piran, in Slovenia.
On 27 September 2002 the President of the Republic conferred the title of city: in this way we wanted to "reward" the long history of what was once the "Magnificent Community", as well as the resourcefulness of its inhabitants and the people who made it famous. Among these, two descendants of the Acerbi family should be mentioned: Giuseppe Acerbi (1773-1846), explorer, man of letters and Egyptologist, e Giovanni Acerbi (1825-1869), intendant of the expedition of the Thousand following Garibaldi. The Acerbi International Literary Award which, every year, aims to bring cultures and peoples closer together.
Among other important manifestations, we must not forget the Carnival, of nineteenth-century origins and among the oldest in Italy, hinged on the characteristic mask of King Dumpling.

1 Mazzini square (Formerly Piazza d'Armi). It represents the heart of the city, a political, religious and commercial center and the most significant buildings overlook it: Gonzaga-Acerbi palace, with the civic tower and the Torrazzo North; there provost church of Sant'Erasmo East; the Riva palace and i arcades with the shops of the merchants to the south; the municipal building with the lodge of the Magnificent Community West.
- Its layout has remained almost unchanged over the centuries: the square is characterized by a rectangular plan, presumably corresponding to the ancient forum Roman. Existing already at the beginning of the fourteenth century, the square was crossed by the Tartarello canal, then discovered, which also fed the defense moat in front of the palace of the lords of Castel Goffredo. Redesigned at the beginning of the sixteenth century during the marquisate of Aloisio Gonzaga, it is a particularly suggestive and scenographic place and is often chosen to host cultural events, concerts and public events, such as the traditional carnival of Castel Goffredo with the election of King Gnocco. It has always been the center of the life of the city: from 1457 fairs were held there, the feasts for the arrival of the bishops and also the major personalities who visited Castel Goffredo have always passed through this square: from the Emperor Charles V on the 28th June 1543, to San Carlo Borromeo in 1580, to Vittorio Emanuele II future king of Italy in May 1848, to Giuseppe Garibaldi, on 27-28-29 April 1862. On 3 January 1593, on the main door of the provost church of Sant'Erasmo, was assassinated Rodolfo Gonzaga, third marquis of Castel Goffredo, on his way to mass accompanied by his wife Elena Aliprandi and his daughter Cinzia.

- 2 Castelvecchio (pedestrian zone). The first urban nucleus of Castel Goffredo, surrounded by walls and moat, presumably formed within the ruins of the castrum Roman and will be called Castellum vetus, or "Castelvecchio". Built between 900 and 1000, the village is mentioned in a document dated 12 June 1480 in which Ludovico Gonzaga, bishop of Mantua and lord of Castel Goffredo, entered into agreements with the municipality on the possession of some local lands. In a document dated 1337 the town is mentioned with the name of "castle of the lands of Castro Guyfredo" which closed the village of "Castelvecchio" (1492). An alley in "Castelvecchio" was named after the Emperor Charles V, in memory of his visit to the Marquis Aloisio Gonzaga on 28 June 1543. The ancient village also included: the medieval castle, now disappeared; the Church of Santa Maria del Consorzio, the oldest in the city, demolished in 1986, of which the fifteenth-century bell tower and the frescoed apse are still preserved; the Civic Tower, 27 meters high, which served as the gateway (called door old castles) and closed the access to Castelvecchio; the Gonzaga-Acerbi Palace; Gonzaga Square; the ancient walls.

- 3 Gonzaga-Acerbi Palace, Mazzini square (private and not open to visitors). Begun in the fourteenth century and brought to its current splendor in the sixteenth by Aloisio Gonzaga, this jewel of the city has always been the residence of the lords who succeeded one another in Castel Goffredo, starting with the Gonzagas of Mantua. A moat was placed in defense of the noble residence, which is no longer present today. Inside there are frescoes from the probable school of Giulio Romano and marble colonnades. From the internal loggia there is a view on an internal garden in which green trees and fragrant plants, among which noteworthy are the roses from Alexandria of Egypt, brought here by the will of the Egyptologist Giuseppe Acerbi, owner of the palace in the nineteenth century.
- 4 Town Hall and Loggia of the Magnificent Community, Mazzini square.
Open Monday to Friday. The Town Hall, or whatever it was called in 1330 when it was built, domo comunis, also stands in Piazza Mazzini. The current appearance is the work of the renovations of the early sixteenth century. The ground floor houses the so-called "Loggia delle grida" or the place where the neighborhood met, the only body responsible for the appointment of a Council, responsible for public affairs. Not to be missed inside are a small collection of twentieth-century works and a Roman stele dedicated to the god Mercury.

- 5 Riva palace in the city, Mazzini square (private and not open to visitors). Probably built at the end of the fifteenth century, it was the town residence of the noble Riva family. In its rooms Bartolomeo Riva welcomed Vittorio Emanuele II, the future king of Italy in May 1848. Private and not accessible to the public.

- 6 Old hospital, Via Mantova (private and not open to visitors). The origin of the Castel Goffredo hospital dates back to the 13th century. Since 1288 there was a "Congregation for Mutual Aid" (on the model of the Congregation of the Misericordia Maggiore of Bergamo) on site. This congregation was called "Congregation of Santa Maria di Castel Goffredo", which used as its headquarters the Church of Santa Maria del Consorzio, now disappeared. With the assets bequeathed, the company established in about 1400 the "loco de le sorele e de li sick brothers". In 1461 the doctor-physicist Stefano de 'Negrini was already working in the village and in 1477 Alessandro de' Gezi of Cremona. In 1479 there was a division of the territory of Castel Goffredo as regards the right to care for the sick. It remained in operation until 1964, when the wards were transferred to the Civil Hospital on the outskirts of the city.

- 7 Municipal Theater and Casa del Fascio, Matteotti Square. Designed in the late thirties, they are an example of a building of Italian rationalist architecture. The theater is currently in disuse; the Casa del Fascio houses the municipal library.
- 8 House of the Praetor, Via Botturi (private and not open to visitors). Located on the corner of via Botturi and via IV Novembre, it is a building dating back to 1600. It was later transformed into a kindergarten (1630) and then into the district commissioner's house when Castel Goffredo became the district capital.

- 9 Palace of the ancient provost (Not open to visitors), Via Andrea Botturi 5 (In the historic center). Built in the Renaissance period, it has undergone several restorations over time, the last of which in 2016. It has always been the rectory and residence of the provost of Castel Goffredo. Adjacent to the MAST Castel Goffredo Museum.

- 10 Porches, Piazza Mazzini and Via Roma. Dating back to the 15th century, they represent an important architectural and cultural heritage for the city. They have always housed the shops of merchants and are the witnesses of all the events that take place in the Renaissance Piazza Mazzini, which they overlook.
Religious architectures
- 11 Provostal church of Sant'Erasmo, Mazzini square, ☎ 39 0376 771999, @[email protected]. The cult of Sant'Erasmo has very ancient origins in these lands; there is, in fact, news of the presence of a place of worship dedicated to the saint since 1288. The church itself has been the object, several times over the centuries, of the attention of artists and architects who have restored it from time to time or expanded. The construction of the current church began in the second half of the fifteenth century in the Renaissance style and was completed only at the end of the sixteenth century. Inside, with three naves, it preserves important works of art, including a canvas by the Mantuan painter Giuseppe Bazzani and the marble altar commissioned by Andrea Gamba. The church was also an important setting for historical events, such as the killing of Prince Rodolfo Gonzaga in 1593 following a popular conspiracy, at the time when this lively and important center was disputed between various Italian lords, before becoming definitively Gonzaga. . Inside the church is set up the Treasure of Sant’Erasmo.

- 12 Church of the Disciplini, Garibaldi Street (not open to visitors). Not far from the center, you will find this other example of Renaissance art; the church, completed in 1587, was the seat of the Confraternity of Disciplini. It also has a bell tower, a seventeenth-century addition. Moving inside, you cannot fail to notice the beautiful sixteenth-century frescoes, which explain the life of the prophet John the Baptist better than in words to the faithful illiterate of the time and to the curious of today's art. No less valuable is the altar in polychrome marble, a work of the eighteenth century, testimony of the skill of Angelo and Giambattista Lepreni. The church, after a long activity as a place of worship, is today deconsecrated but not unused; it is in fact home to interesting exhibitions and cultural events, the only moments in which the church is open and can be visited.

- 13 Church of San Giuseppe, Via Botturi 6. The church, in Baroque style, was originally used as a stable of the Gonzagas. Sold in the mid-18th century to the Compagnia del Santissimo Sacramento which transformed it into a place of worship. After some interruptions it resumed its religious function in 2004, even if over the centuries it has lost some pieces, such as the sacristy, now separated and used as a private residence.

- 14 Former Church of Santa Maria del Consorzio, Gonzaga square ang. via Manzoni (open on Thursday morning, during the opening of the internal office). It was the oldest church in the city, erected in 1288 and demolished in 1986. This building has changed its function many times. Originally a church, it was rebuilt while maintaining its sacred function in 1434 in the Gothic style; later it became with the Gonzagas and mainly under Aloisio, the mausoleum of the reigning Lords. It was later used as a Monte di Pietà to be demolished a few decades ago. This historical monument of Castel Goffredo is also present in the Lombard cycling itineraries. If you come here by bike, be sure to stop for a moment to admire the fifteenth-century bell tower and the frescoed apse (during a few days it is open to the public).
Military architectures
- 15 Civic tower (Castelvecchio Tower), Mazzini square (Temporarily not open to visitors). Characteristic leaning Tower, with its 27 meters and its Ghibelline battlements, the work of 13th century masters, is the symbol of Castel Goffredo. It was originally called door old castles, or in good Italian "door of the old castle" and marked the limit of the fortification and the access to the village of "Castelvecchio". Since 1438 the tower has marked the days of the inhabitants with its clock. If even the interior is not accessible, nothing prevents you from taking a walk around it and peeking at its external details, including some tombstones and the marble coat of arms of the Gonzagas, from the 16th century. The internal recovery works of the tower have started which, in the spring of 2021, will allow you to climb to the top to admire the panorama of the city.
![](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/eb/Castel_Goffredo-Torrazzo2.jpg/200px-Castel_Goffredo-Torrazzo2.jpg)
- 16 Torrazzo, Mazzini square (private and not open to visitors). This second tower was built in the Middle Ages, and raised in the 14th century in order to become the residence of the vicar of the Gonzagas of Mantua. Some ancient sources report that the Torrazzo was not, however, only a princely residence. In the fourteenth century, a pawn shop run by Jews was housed here and in the sixteenth the walls of the Torrazzo were honored with the visit of a venerable sixteenth-century figure like San Luigi Gonzaga. The same rooms, in 1593, held Elena Aliprandi and the daughters of Rodolfo Gonzaga prisoner, after her killing in the churchyard of Sant'Erasmo following a popular revolt. The windows now visible are a later work and date back to the 1700s. This monument is also not accessible to the public as it is private.

- 17 Torrione di Sant'Antonio and Gonzaga walls, Martyrs of Liberation Square (open to the public in summer). Dating back to the fifteenth century, it was part of the seven towers built, together with the walls, by the Gonzagas to defend the village. Together with these towers it constituted the second wall (in chronological order). In its vicinity there are still traces of the ancient moat. He is the only one of the seven still left to be able to tell us the story of the Gonzagas, given that in the 19th century the work of killing the other six began. The reason for the narrow escape for this tower was its position, inside the La Fontanella Park, one of the public parks of Castel Goffredo.

- 18 First section of the walls, Via Monte Grappa (open to the public in summer). A first section of the ancient city walls (11th century) is still visible today. The first fortified perimeter of Castel Goffredo, equipped with a defense moat, was formed within the ruins of castrum Roman and was built between 900 and 1000. The first urban nucleus was built inside and it was called Castellum vetus, or "Castelvecchio", preserved almost intact today.
![](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/30/Castel_Goffredo-Via_Manzoni.jpg/200px-Castel_Goffredo-Via_Manzoni.jpg)
- 19 Second section of the walls, Via Monte Grappa, ang. via Manzoni (visible from via Monte Grappa). A second section of the ancient city walls (11th century, left in the photo) is still visible today.
- 20 Porta Picaloca, Via Mantova (entrance to the historic center). Also called Porta dell'Ospitale, it was once one of the access gates to the fortress of Castel Goffredo, for those coming from the east. It is the only one left (rebuilt) among the four ancient gates of access to the city. In medieval times, to access the city from the east it was necessary to cross a bridge that crossed the moat to defend the fortress-city and then to Porta Picaloca, a two-storey building.

- 29 Annunciation, Via Roma (Visibile parzialmente su edificio privato).
![](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/2c/Castel_Goffredo-Masso_longilineo.jpg/120px-Castel_Goffredo-Masso_longilineo.jpg)

Epigrafi aloysiane

![](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/70/Castel_Goffredo_villa_Beffa.jpg/200px-Castel_Goffredo_villa_Beffa.jpg)
![](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/02/Castel_Goffredo_-_Oratorio_di_S_Michele.jpg/200px-Castel_Goffredo_-_Oratorio_di_S_Michele.jpg)
![](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/ed/Palazzo_Riva-1990.jpg/200px-Palazzo_Riva-1990.jpg)
![](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/92/Castel_Goffredo-Corte_Palazzina.jpg/200px-Castel_Goffredo-Corte_Palazzina.jpg)

Viene lessata in acqua e servita calda.

- Convento dell'Annunciata, Via dell'Annunciata, 19 - Medole, 39 338 3576378, http://www.conventodellannunciata.it, Visitabile su richiesta.
