Located inOltrepò Mantua, adjoins the Modenese; is 44 km from Mantua, 44 from Modena, 47 from Ferrara.

Background

Area of ​​human settlements already in pre-Roman and Etruscan times, it appears in documents written after 1000, when the territory of Poggio was donated by Otto III to the bishop of Mantua, and the donation was confirmed in 1082 by Matilde di Canossa. In 1332 the bishop of Mantua ceded the town to the Gonzagas, to whom he remained always linked, until the annexation of the Duchy of Mantua to the Austrian dominions in 1707, then to Lombardo Veneto after the Napoleonic interlude. With the Unification Poggio added to the toponym the attribute Rusco from the name of a frequent shrub in the area. During the Second World War, important armed clashes took place in the vicinity of Poggio Rusco at Dragoncello.

In January 2012 and in the following month of May 2012 strong earthquakes struck a large area of ​​theEmilia seriously damaging numerous centers of the Po Valley of Emilia between the Autostrada del Sole and the course of the Po, especially in the areas of Modena and the neighboring areas of Ferrara and Reggio, also involving the Oltrepò Mantua, belonging to the Lombardy but orographically part of theEmilia. Gonzaga Palace
  • 1 Municipal building (Gonzaga Palace), Piazza Primo Maggio 5. Designed by Luca Fancelli in the fifteenth century, the building belonged to the Gonzaga branch which was called Nobili Gonzaga; from these in the mid-nineteenth century it passed to Senator Tullio Massarani, then in 1904 to the municipality of Poggio Rusco who bought it and assigned it to the municipal seat. The interior has a single nave with a barrel vault and a hint of a transept. good workmanship are the works preserved in the side altars. In the second altar on the left there is also a panel from the old Romanesque church of Matildic foundation, as well as the fifteen ovals of the Mysteries of the Rosary.
The sacristy preserves a painting of the first church depicting the Deposition, which has recently been attributed to Domenico Fiasella known as the Sarzana. The organ of the church is a precious Montesanti from the late eighteenth century.
The 2012 earthquake caused significant damage to the building: the collapse of part of the vaults and the roof, the detachment of the facade and the bell tower. A cage made it possible to make it safe, until the renovation and consolidation work began in April 2014.
  • 4 Tagliaferro Oratory, via Cantone. The small church was completed in 1771, in the same period as the parish church, and is almost a reproduction in reduced size; this building too has architectural features of a baroque content. It suffered substantial damage as a result of the earthquake, which caused the houses in the square in front of it to collapse, some of which were demolished.
