What see

  • Parish church of San Giovanni Battista. The building was built in 1616 on pre-existing structures that are connected to the Countess Matilde di Canossa, who in the area was lavish in financing the construction of churches and monasteries. There are many renovations that the church has had over the centuries, from the Baroque period to the nineteenth century. The facade is enlivened by pilasters and columns and is divided into a central body and two lower lateral bodies. It preserves a large painting by Giuseppe Bazzani, il Baptism of Jesus dated 1737.

The strong earthquake of 2012 significantly damaged the church, which suffered the collapse of the pediment of the facade, as well as parts of the vault in the nave.

Around

  • Carpi - Capital of the Pio, boasts a monumental historic center of the first order. • Mirandola - Giovanni Pico della Mirandola is the most famous and proverbial character of the family who ruled the city for four centuries, from 1311 to 1711. His monumental area was severely damaged by the 2012 earthquake, which also seriously compromised the productive activities.
  • Parish church of Coriano - The town parish church is one of the many that Matilde di Canossa had built in her vast estates. Remarkable are the remains of frescoes; the momentum of the tall bell tower is astonishing.
  • San Benedetto Po - The Abbey of Polirone perpetuates the memory of Matilde di Canossa, the Grand Countess which linked the name of the town to its fame. The majesty and beauty of the church and the convent structures, combined with the wide breadth of the square, make it a destination of great interest.
  • Revere - The Ducal Palace of Gonzaga recalls that, after the numerous traces left in these lands by the Countess Matilde with the Parish churches, the Gonzagas kept the Oltrepò for many centuries and in each of its villages they intervened to design the urban planning, now equipping them with palaces, now of pleasure villas, now of fortifications

Itineraries

  • In the lands of the Gonzaga - An itinerary through the centers, large and small, which were the capitals of the Gonzaga cadet branches: principalities, marquisates, duchies which, within the Mantuan state structure, enjoyed real independence, often minted coins and held refined courts that rivaled that of Mantua, embellished their urban centers by equipping them with elegant architecture - churches, squares, palaces, walls, towers - and characteristic urban views such as the typical Gonzaga arcades.
  • Rice road - The itinerary - to be carried out in particular from May to September - runs through the Mantua area dedicated to the cultivation of rice, between rivers and canals.
