Background
The abundance of Roman finds testifies to the presence of widespread settlements since ancient times: a well from the Roman era, pottery, remains of houses, all finds now preserved in the National Archaeological Museum of Mantua. Marshy area, with higher areas rising from the water (the bumps), San Giovanni was formed on a higher area of land and was called for a long time Dosso or Dosso della Scaffa. San Giovanni del Dosso was a hamlet of Quistello; gained independence in 1933.
2012 earthquake
In January 2012 and in the following month of May 2012 strong earthquakes struck a large area of theEmilia seriously damaging numerous centers of the Emilian Po Valley between the Autostrada del Sole and the course of the Po, especially in the areas of Modena and the neighboring areas of Ferrara and Reggio, also involving the Oltrepò Mantua, belonging to the Lombardy but orographically part of theEmilia. The earthquake, which in Emilia it also cost numerous victims, in the Oltrepò it hit the historic centers of numerous cities causing collapses, subsidence and injuries in churches and ancient monuments and damaging many others. The centers most affected were Wife, Pegognaga, San Giacomo delle Segnate, Poggio Rusco, Quistello, Gonzaga, San Giovanni del Dosso.

What see
- Parish church of San Giovanni Battista. The building was built in 1616 on pre-existing structures that are connected to the Countess Matilde di Canossa, who in the area was lavish in financing the construction of churches and monasteries. There are many renovations that the church has had over the centuries, from the Baroque period to the nineteenth century. The facade is enlivened by pilasters and columns and is divided into a central body and two lower lateral bodies. It preserves a large painting by Giuseppe Bazzani, il Baptism of Jesus dated 1737.
The strong earthquake of 2012 significantly damaged the church, which suffered the collapse of the pediment of the facade, as well as parts of the vault in the nave.
