Background
The name of the town appears in documents starting from the fourteenth century, among the territories linked to the monastery of Polirone di San Benedetto Po. Its name seems to be linked to the idea of wet, soggy, muddy of late Latin derivation (molleus). In fact, the whole area was subjected to the great reclamation works of the Benedictines, who tore vast plots of particularly fertile land from the marshes. With the hamlet of Bondanello (the latter of more ancient origin, already testified to in 1100) it was part of the territory of Gonzaga; from 1 February 1877 it became an autonomous municipality. Both countries do not have a historic center, since in ancient times their housing consistency was very small. The only buildings of some historical importance are the two churches (unfortunately very damaged by the 2012 earthquake), and the buildings of Galvagnina and Gaidella, also in very precarious conditions due to neglect and the action of the time.
2012 earthquake
In January 2012 and in the following month of May 2012 strong earthquakes struck a large area of theEmilia seriously damaging numerous centers of the Emilian Po Valley between the Autostrada del Sole and the course of the Po, especially in the areas of Modena and the neighboring areas of Ferrara and Reggio, also involving the Oltrepò Mantua, belonging to the Lombardy but orographically part of theEmilia. The earthquake, which in Emilia it also cost numerous victims, in the Oltrepò it hit the historic centers of numerous cities causing collapses, subsidence and injuries in churches and ancient monuments and damaging many others. The centers most affected were Moglia, Pegognaga, San Giacomo delle Segnate, Poggio Rusco, Quistello, Gonzaga, San Giovanni del Dosso.

- 1 Parish church of San Giovanni Battista. It is a building with three naves, imposing but with a not heavy visual impact, since the Baroque architectural lines are however affected by the elegant Renaissance impetus. Built at the end of the 16th century, it had a single nave; it became a parish in 1609 and was enlarged, lengthened and equipped with three naves in the eighteenth century. It houses paintings by Giovanni Cadioli, an eighteenth-century artist. It was seriously injured by the 2012 earthquake with collapses and damage to the terminal part of the facade and to the roof.
- 2 Parish church of Santa Croce, Cesare Battisti Square (in Bondanello). The small church, with simple lines, already existed in the fifteenth century; it was rebuilt between 1663 and 1669 since it had fallen into disrepair in 1603. Raised and restored in 1886, in 1966 it suffered the collapse of part of the apse. However, he received the greatest outrage from the 2012 earthquake, which damaged the bell tower in such a way as to require its total demolition. The commitment of the population of the hamlet is now aimed at finding resources for its reconstruction. The sacred building contains fragments of the Cross.
- 3 Villa Galvagnina (about 5 km from the center of Moglia, between Coazze di Moglia and the hamlet of Galvagnina di Pegognaga.). In a state of shameful decay, this beautiful mansion in the Mantuan Renaissance style probably dates back to the 15th century. It is spread over two floors with an almost square plan; it was internally decorated with frescoes by Giulio Romano and his school (Fornaretto Mantovano, Bernardino Campi) in the large hall on the ground floor and in the other rooms. The wooden ceilings are also valuable as well as the floor which retains the original tiles. It belonged to the Gonzagas of Mantua; between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries it belonged to the Galvagni nobles, to whom we owe the name that the villa currently bears. Passed by several owners, it was finally used as a farmhouse and as a rustic house until, purchased by the Municipality of Mantua in 1967 and restored, it was open to the public until the 1980s with a high number of visits. Now it needs urgent restoration, after long years of neglect to which the damage of the 2012 earthquake has added that made it unusable.
