What see

Santa Maria della Pieve
  • Main attraction1 Sanctuary of the Madonna della Pieve (Santa Maria della Pieve). Simply called Pieve di Cavriana, the church stands isolated on a hill and is one of the most important and best preserved Romanesque churches in Mantua.
The parish church, entirely in terracotta, was built in the 11th century and the interior with a single nave is covered by a wooden structure with trusses. The 14th century high relief of Santa Maria Nova is located in the presbytery.
In the fifties it underwent a significant conservative restoration, to repair the damage caused by the Second World War.
In the surrounding garden there are some steles dedicated to the battles of the Risorgimento.
The castle
  • 2 Castle. Military structure probably founded in the 11th century, it was one of the most important fortifications in the Mantua area, with four corner towers and stood on the hill overlooking the town. The castle underwent several raids in the fourteenth century by the Visconti of Milan. The structure was enlarged by Francesco I Gonzaga who stayed there for a long time also to escape the plague and died here in 1407. The Marquis Ludovico Gonzaga commissioned the architect Giovanni da Padova to consolidate the defensive structure and made it an important residence. Among the architects who embellished the residence were Andrea Mantegna and Luca Fancelli who, given the mild climate, bought some land in the area. Isabella d'Este also stayed in the castle for a long time, during the absences from Mantua of her husband, the Marquis Francesco II Gonzaga. Two other members of the Gonzaga family occupied the castle and found death there: Eleonora de 'Medici, wife of Vincenzo I Gonzaga, on 9 September 1611 and Carlo Gonzaga, second son of the VIII Duke of Mantua Carlo I, who died here on 14 August 1631 .
At the beginning of the seventeenth century the structure was partially demolished. Around 1770, under the Austrian domination, the castle was almost completely demolished and the material was used for the construction of Villa Mirra.
Today the castle, partially restored and consolidated in 2004, remains part of the walls and the tower transformed into a bell tower.
Villa Mirra
  • 3 Villa Mirra, Castle Square 5, 39 0376 806330, fax: 39 030 392652, @. Of sixteenth-century origins, it was rebuilt in 1770 under the Austrian domination, using the materials due to the demolition of the walls and the castle. The villa belonged to the Gonzaga family of Mantua and Carlo Gonzaga assigned it as a dowry to his daughter in 1479 when he married Count Odorico d 'Arch.
The Austrians under the command of Marshal Dagobert Sigmund von Wurmser set up their headquarters there during the battle of Castiglione of 5 August 1796 against Napoleon Bonaparte. From the beginning and up to the mid-nineteenth century the building passed into the property of some noble Mantuan families. After the victory in the battle of Solferino and San Martino on June 24, 1859, Napoleon III and King Vittorio Emanuele II found themselves victorious in the villa. The villa was sold to the family of Mirra Pastore (hence the name) in 1883.
An important event took place in the villa on 24 June 1959, the first centenary of the battle of Solferino and San Martino, when it hosted the President of the French Republic General Charles De Gaulle and the President of the Italian Republic Giovanni Gronchi for the official breakfast in the hall on the floor. noble.
The building surrounded by a park became the property of the Municipality of Cavriana in 1976 and hosts cultural events, conferences and exhibitions. The Upper Mantuan Archaeological Museum is housed in a wing of the building.
