Cocoon is a city of Lombardy.

To know

The city of Bozzolo, whose banner is united, in the coat of arms of the province of Mantua with that of the city of Castiglione delle Stiviere is that of Mantua, following the restructuring that involved various public services (health, justice, etc.), it must refer to the Viadanese area. However, a strong spirit of identity and pride for its prestigious past is still very much alive, which makes its inhabitants feel above all Bozzolese, not gregarious from other centers.

Geographical notes

Located in the Lombard plain to the right of the Oglio river, Bozzolo belongs to the area of the province of Mantua which is located on the right bank of the Oglio, and in the wider interprovincial area Casalasco Viadanese, better known in recent decades as the District Oglio Po, with capitals Casalmaggiore, which is 16 km away, e Viadana (23 km)

Background

Vaudiolo or Vauziolo (small ford) already appears in documents of the 9th and 10th centuries; in 949 it was already defined Castrum. It is politically subject to the Municipality of Cremona, then to notable Cremonese families such as Dovara, Persico, Cavalcabò. The Benedictines operate in its territory in the Gironde Abbey, documented in 1101, which disappeared in the 14th century.

The destiny of Bozzolo is inextricably linked to that of the Gonzagas in 1408. Later, starting from 1478, it is part of those Gonzaga territories that enjoy independence from the main branch of Mantua, and change hands among the members of the Gonzaga cadet branches, now united, now redistributed among the descendants: Gazzuolo, San Martino dall'Argine, Rivarolo Mantovano, Commessage, Sabbioneta, Pomponesco, Dovarese Island, Ostiano.

In the early sixteenth century he settled in Bozzolo (as well as in Rivarolo Mantovano is Sabbioneta) a thriving Jewish community, dedicated to trade and the lending of money. The Jewish Cemetery remains of their presence in Bozzolo.

The Gonzagas who have most closely linked their name to Bozzolo's fortunes are Vespasiano, the creator of Sabbioneta, and Julius Caesar. Vespasiano built a fortification with cannon-proof bulwarks in place of the old castle, which was demolished in 1812; Julius Caesar obtained from Emperor Rudolph II ofAustria the title of Prince, and for Bozzolo the title of City, becoming the capital of the Principality of Bozzolo which incorporates the other six centers of the fiefdom. Establishes the Mint and the Friday market, which continues to this day.

The population, under his Principality, doubles. His successor Scipio establishes the hospital and favors the establishment of many religious orders. He is succeeded by Ferdinando and Giovan Francesco, who died in 1703 without heirs. The Principality was then assigned to the Gonzagas of Mantua until 1708; to the Gonzagas of Guastalla until 1746; to the Austrian Empire until 1771.

In contemporary times Bozzolo has linked his name to the figure of Don Primo Mazzolari, an eminent clergyman who ruled the parish from 1932 until his death in 1959; his remains rest in the parish church of San Pietro Apostolo. On 20 June 2017, Pope Francis went on a private visit to Bozzolo to pray at Mazzolari's tomb.

What see

Saint Peter the Apostle

The four virgins -Santa Artemisia, Sant'Agata, Santa Caterina and Santa Lucia- by Marco Antonio Ghislina
Choir and organ
  • 1 Parish Church of San Pietro Apostolo. This church, born around 1576, was originally annexed to the convent of the Augustinians, a religious order that had established itself in Bozzolo in 1518, following the policy of the Gonzaga princes who intended to expand and populate the territory and the inhabited center. When in 1798 the Augustinian order, like many others, was suppressed, the church and the convent became the property of the State, which in 1804 passed them to the Parish of San Pietro.
The parish church stood in the medieval district of Bozzolo, and since it was in very bad condition at the time of the acquisition of the Augustinian church, it was demolished and the parish seat moved to the larger church also dedicated to St. Peter. The marbles, the altarpieces and the furnishings of the ancient church were transferred to the building.
San Pietro Apostolo has an imposing façade divided into two superimposed orders separated by a relief frame, with pilasters and geometric decorative lines from the end of the 16th century, the period of construction. Its majestic Renaissance interior has three naves, with five chapels on each side. Each chapel has altars coming in part from the primitive parish church, in part from other religious buildings.
There are numerous paintings that are preserved there: one Crucifixion by Jacopo da Borbone of 1621; St. James the Apostle by Ermenegildo Lodi di Cremona; The four Virgins -Santa Artemisia, Sant'Agata, Santa Caterina and Santa Lucia-, attributed to Marco Antonio Ghislina (1676 - 1756) of Casalmaggiore; The Blessed Virgin of Good Counsel by Francesco Chiozzi, a San Gerolamo, one Madonna and Child with San Liborio.
Above the entrance door an elegant choir loft houses an imposing organ of the firm Fratelli Lingiardi of Pavia which was built in 1864 and bears the production number 144.
The remains of Don Primo Mazzolari are kept in the church (Cremona 1890 - Bozzolo 1959), a great figure of Catholic priest of the early twentieth century, who anticipated many orientations of the Second Vatican Council and was a champion in the fight against all forms of injustice and violence. His work took place for a long time in the area ofOglio Po Casalasco Viadanese; in fact in 1921 he was parish priest in Cicognara, a hamlet of Viadana; from Cicognara he was transferred to Bozzolo in 1932, where he served as parish priest until his death in 1959. His tomb, on the right of the presbytery, was made from a sketch by the sculptor Giacomo Manzù.
Church of San Francesco - Mausoleum of Giulio Cesare Gonzaga
Ceiling fresco
  • 2 Church of San Francesco. Giulio Cesare Gonzaga was the first Prince of Bozzolo and conceived for his own glory a Palatine Chapel which was at the same time his own mausoleum. It was for this reason that he entrusted the construction of the church of San Francesco to the architect Zilio de 'Zilli, which was erected between 1604 and 1606. The building was joined to the court palace. The facade follows the style of the church of Santa Maria della Visitazione (called of the Spinsters) of Venice; it is divided into two superimposed orders decorated with classical architectural elements, all surmounted by a triangular tympanum finished with five obelisks that recall its sepulchral destination, while the entrance portal has a round tympanum.
The church has no apse, but a wall on which stands an architectural altarpiece of great grandeur, with black marble columns and an altarpiece by Gaspare Celio in the center, Crucifixion with St. Francis and Julius Caesar, work of 1605. The tomb of the Prince is kept at the foot of the apparatus.
The perspective architecture of the vault helps to give the optical illusion of increasing the size of the building, which on the side walls has frescoes of modest stature, probably the work of the last five years of the eighteenth century, when the oratory was closed to the public and was seat of a constitutional circle.
