Geographical notes
Pomponesco is a town in the lower Po valley in the Viadana area of the district Oglio Po , on the left bank of the river Po. It is 7 km away. from Viadana, 19 from Casalmaggiore, 32 from Parma, 35 from Mantua, 38 from Reggio Emilia.
Background
It had its period of greatest splendor in the second half of the 16th century, when Giulio Cesare Gonzaga made it the seat of his court for about twenty years. The town was rebuilt according to the canons of the time, which longed for the ideal city, the greatest example of which was Gonzaga Sabbioneta of Vespasiano Gonzaga, as well as - in a minor form - other Gonzaga centers such as, for example, Cocoon, San Martino dall'Argine, Rivarolo Mantovano, Guastalla etc. The splendid square remains, which opens up vast and scenographic at the foot of the Po embankment; the castle that bordered the opposite side has disappeared.
How to orient yourself
The monumental center of the town is all enclosed in its square, a large architecturally balanced widening, with the side religious opposite to that layman, the castle (only a few traces remain) which closed the third side, opposite the scenic staircase that climbs the embankment from the smaller square that extends the larger widening.
Go up the three flights of the staircase, reached the embankment, you can admire the wide floodplain. But beware: a curious sign warns you that you could enter the ........Via del Peccato!

- 3 Archpriest Church of the Seven Martyrs Brothers.
- 4 The synagogue and the Jewish cemetery, via F.lli Cantoni. The Jewish presence in the lands governed by the various branches of the Gonzaga was constant from the end of the fifteenth century. The Gonzagas welcomed the Jews expelled from the Duchy of Milan and allowed them to settle in their duchy; in exchange, wealthy Jewish families always financed the Gonzagas in their military campaigns and government policy. The Cantoni family, whose members were among the first Jews to arrive in the town at the beginning of the seventeenth century, especially stood out in Pomponesco; the writer Alberto Cantoni (1841-1904) belonged to this family. The Jewish cemetery is preserved along the tree-lined avenue named after the Cantoni brothers, almost opposite the Christian one; the current location dates back to the early twentieth century, when the ancient cemetery that had been built at the beginning of the eighteenth century was transferred there. The surrounding wall has been completely restored; the existing tombs are well preserved.
- In the village there are still the building of the Jewish asylum, now transformed into a civic hall, and the building that housed the synagogue, whose dome is clearly visible. The place is now used for private use, but the structure has been preserved in its lines.
