Background

The city had a past of splendor with the Lordship of the Gonzaga; before them it was the capital of its own state with the Torelli family, and finally co-capital in the Duchy of Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla. It was already an important center in the Middle Ages, when it hosted the Council of Urban II in 1095 in the church of Pieve; a second Council, always in the same church, was held there in 1106 with Pope Paschal II.

For a long time the seat of the noble court, today it houses various private and public services. The Palace tells a long and complex history of sovereignty. Built at the beginning of the 16th century as the "new" residence of the Torello counts, with the arrival of the Gonzagas in 1539 work began to transform it into a real court. Works entrusted to Francesco Capriani, known as Volterra, who defined the structure as a square arcaded courtyard, even if the Palazzo Ducale will reach a definitive structure only at the threshold of the seventeenth century. It is not easy to go back to the original appearance of the Palace, due to the alterations that took place in the nineteenth century, necessary to adapt the building to different uses. The Palace became the private residence of the Mossina family in 1908. Today, publicly owned, it has undergone important structural consolidation and restoration works. The north wing of the main floor houses the Maldotti picture gallery, a selection of about fifty paintings belonging to the collection of the historic Maldotti Library.
The Palace and the Picture Gallery can be visited on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays during the opening hours of the Tourist Information Office which will also act as a ticket office and entrance to the route. Guided tours for groups by appointment.
