Mezzani was an autonomous municipality of Parma.

To know

From 1 January 2019 from the merger of the municipalities of Sorbolo and Mezzani the new municipality of Sorbolo Mezzani. The municipal seat is located in the town hall of the hamlet of Sorbolo.

Geographical notes

It is a polycentric municipality, whose original name municipality of the Mezzani was to indicate the insistence on the territory of three countries sharing the same name. It is located at the northeastern end of the fertile Parma lowland on Emilian bank of the Po on the border with Reggiano and the Lombardy area ofOglio Po.

The Po in Mezzani

The territory is rich in water: in addition to being on the right bank of the Po, it is also crossed by the Parma stream, the Enza stream and the Parma dead, an abandoned bed in Parma which today houses a nature reserve.

Background

Most of the municipal territory took shape during the medieval period, originating from the so-called islands of the Po Mezzani. The first land to form was Casale, founded on an island of the Po already existing in 890, which was later joined to the right bank as the river had moved further north.

Emperor Charles the Fat in 880 granted the banks of the Po, Parma, Enza and Taro rivers and the islands that were in them to the Bishop of Parma. For this reason, Upper and Lower Mezzano, formed as islands of the Po, became possessions of the Parma episcopate. The time of their formation is not certain, however in 1131 there was already a first Mezzano that corresponded to the current Superior, the Inferiore was formed after 1306.

Mezzano Rondani was built on the Lombard bank of the Po. In the fifteenth century, after a major flood that affected the area between Casalmaggiore and Fossacaprara the river moved north and the town found itself on an island. Later it was joined with the Parma bank.

Mazzabue, formerly a marshy territory owned by the bishop, was purchased in 1291, reclaimed and cultivated by Cardinal Gerardo Bianchi. These lands were donated by Bianchi to the prebend of the Baptistery of Parma and subsequently to the abbey of S. Martino dè Bocci.

While Mezzano Rondani, Casale and Mazzabue were part of the ducal jurisdiction, Mezzano Inferiore and Superiore were always territories of the Bishop of Parma that in Mezzano Superiore he had a building in which he lived during his visits. The Parma episcopate granted the local population various tax privileges.

After several attempts, in 1763 the Dukes of Parma succeeded in obtaining from the Bishop the renunciation of their secular lordship over the territories of the two Mezzani. The population of the two countries deprived of the autonomy and privileges they had enjoyed until then, refused to swear allegiance to Duke Philip I of Parma. The situation was resolved with the intervention of the ducal dragoons.

In 1861 Mezzani with the Duchy of Parma became part of the Kingdom of Italy.

Towards the end of the 19th century, a heated debate began on whether to carry out reclamation works to make the land in the southern area of the municipality exploitable for agriculture. In 1905 the Parma / Enza reclamation consortium was established, but it will only be between 1910 and 1911 that the works will be carried out which will see, among other things, the shift to the south of the Parmetta cable and the construction of a pumping station at Bocca d 'Enza.

What see

- the church of Mezzano Superiore
  • 1 parish church of S. Michele (Mezzano Superiore). A first church was built in the 12th century. It was then rebuilt in a more advanced position than the previous one and then consecrated by Bishop Sagramoro Sagramori in 1479, as evidenced by an erratic stone visible in the rectory. The bell tower was raised in 1664. The body of the building was renovated between 1694 and 1736, based on a project by the architect Giuliano Mozzani who, however, kept the pre-existing façade elevation unchanged. The style of the front of the church, characterized by a large round tympanum and pairs of connecting volutes, dates back to the 17th century.
  • 2 parish church of S. Maria nascente (Lower Mezzano). The parish church of Mezzano Inferiore was built for the first time in 1563. It was then rebuilt between 1754 and 1779 on a project by Bettoli. Inside there is an organ built by Cavalletti in 1829 and an interesting high altar in inlaid marble from 1799.
- the church of Mezzano Inferiore
  • 3 oratory of the Beata Vergine delle Grazie (Lower Mezzano). It is located in the locality Borghetto at the intersection of via Pertini and via Toscanini. The building has a rectangular plan with a gabled façade and a sloping cornice. The interior has a face with crossed sails.
The church of Mezzano Rondani
  • 4 parish church of S. Maria Annunziata (Mezzano Rondani). The parish church of Mezzano Rondani, located in the municipality of Colorno, was built twice. The first church, built when the town was still on the shore casalasca, it was destroyed by a flood of 1733. It was later rebuilt in 1745. On a plaque placed on the facade you can see the coat of arms of the Rondani, once the lords of the place; always in their memory four wrought iron swifts are positioned on the spiers of the bell tower. Inside the church there is an organ, a Traeri built in 1734, coming from a church in the Modena area. The instrument is in good condition following a recent restoration and is sometimes used for concerts.
  • 5 parish church of S. Silvestro (Farmhouse). We have news of a first church already from a bull of Pope Lucio II of March 1144 in which it is mentioned as property of the monastery of San Giovanni: Ecclesima Sancti Silvestri de insula. The current one was later erected on the foundations of the existing one around the middle of the 18th century; some traces of the medieval building are still visible today.
  • 6 Bishop's palace (Mezzano Superiore). Wanted by Msgr. Ferdinando Farnese (Bishop of Parma from 1573 to 1606) was never finished, but from some drawings of the sixteenth century it should have become grandiose. It was preceded by a courtyard where there were stables and sheds, in the same building were the bargello, the archive, the oratory and the prisons. Today it is used as a private residence.
