There Parma Morta nature reserve is a protected natural area ofEmilia Romagna located in the municipality of Mezzani, in province of Parma, established in 1990. The reserve is entirely included in the site of community interest Parma Morta (IT4020025), of which it represents one tenth of the surface.
Geographical notes
It extends for 64.51 hectares completely within the limits of the municipal territory of Mezzani. Located between the mouths of the Parma and Enza streams, the reserve includes a stretch of flat land almost 5 km long along a humid area called Parma deadThe waters that stagnate in this branch of the no longer active stream are those of the Enza which rise up to the height of the locality Parmetta, about half a kilometer from the current course of Parma.To guarantee the area a constant level of water, necessary for maintaining the ecosystem, a phytodepuration system has been created which ensures a constant water flow from the surrounding reclamation channels. entrance.

This nature reserve serves as a refuge for numerous animal species removed from the surrounding cultivated land. It is particularly home to amphibians, reptiles and birds: some of the target species nest here birds directive of the European Community. Background
The waters around which the reserve was established occupy the ancient riverbed of the stream Parma which once flowed into the Enza. In 1870 its course was diverted making it flow directly into the Po. The old abandoned course was since then called Parma dead. In 1990 an oriented nature reserve was established in the area.
