Background

Several Roman artifacts have been found which testify to the presence of an inhabited center; moreover, the nearby Brixellum was an important center of the empire; a Roman funerary stele is kept at the Middle School; in the public gardens of Reggio Emilia was transferred the Tomb of the Concordi. His name, which he seems to remember broken del Po, also reminds us of the ancient importance of the river as a trade route. Boretto took advantage of it to become a trading center; river navigation also led to the creation of a colony of Veneti, documented as early as the seventh century and flourishing in the twelfth. To them we owe the Basilica of San Marco, patron saint of Venice but also of Boretto; the statue of Lion of San Marco which is located in the square was donated by Venice in commemoration of the close ties held by Boretto with the Venetian populations. Duke Francesco III d'Este names the town noble community, thus making him free from Brescello; the definitive autonomy, however, was only achieved in 1859.
