Background
The pike is in its coat of arms, and Lucciaia or Lucciara, a place rich in pike, is one of the probable etymologies of its name. In 781 it was named among the appurtenances of the Church of Reggio; it then passes to the Monastery of San Sisto di Piacenza. Until the fourteenth century the territory was disputed and was at the center of struggles between the Papacy, the Empire and the Municipality of Cremona, of Reggio, of Mantua, of Modena; in 1311 the emperor Arrigo VII gives Luzzara to Passerino Bonacolsi lord of Mantua is Guastalla to Gilberto from Correggio. When the Gonzagas succeed the Bonacolsi they erect a circle of walls. Meanwhile, Cremona tries several times to take possession of it again, but the Emperor grants the territory of Luzzara to the Gonzagas as perpetual property, who also receive Reggio. With the division of the territories between the family branches, Luzzara passes to a cadet branch of the Gonzaga, and takes on the typical urban appearance of the Gonzaga centers following the urban works commissioned by the Lords, including a fortress and a wall. War events of the early eighteenth century led to the destruction of the fortifications. When the Gonzaga house fell, Luzzara passed to Parma, then to the Este family of Modena to finally land in united Italy.
