Hanover (not M. Hannover) is the capital Lower Saxony in Germany. Hanover built a huge exhibition complex for the World Expo in 2000 and has hosted some of the largest exhibitions in the world. It is therefore called "Expo City" or "Exhibition City" (Expo Stadt / Messestadt). Hanover also hosted the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The main language is German. English is not common except at major international events. Nevertheless, most people understand English and will be able to help you find your way.
Characteristic
Hanover was one of the most heavily damaged cities during World War II, leaving only a few historical landmarks. Don't expect to see beautiful centuries-old buildings; even the Old Town area (Altstadt) is "new" as all the old houses left after the war (around 40) have been taken from all over the city and collected in one place. The area is surrounded by buildings from the 1950s and 1960s which give the streets a bit of a heavy atmosphere. However, there are still a few residential neighborhoods consisting of late 19th century housing stock with often elaborate historical (Victorian) and Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) decorations just outside the city center, such as Oststadt ', Letter or Linden.
Hanover has large green areas with forests and large parks. The landscape is mostly flat and the River Leine flows through the city. Lake Masch (Maschsee) is rather spectacular given its size as an artificial object.
The city had a special relationship with the late French artist Niki de Saint-Phalle. She had several of her works in public places in Hanover (ie "Nanas", "The Cave" in the Great Garden) as well as at the Sprengel Museum. To honor her contribution to Hanover, she was awarded honorary citizenship from the city council. In addition, the renovated "underground" shopping arcade from the central station to Kröpcke has been dubbed the "Niki de Saint-Phalle Promenade".
Hannover's public services are excellent due to the major redevelopment of the World Expo 2000. The shopping area underneath the train station was renovated in 2005-2006 in preparation for the World Cup.
History
Hanover was founded in the Middle Ages on the south bank of the Leine River and became a relatively large city in the 13th century. Its original name, Honovere, could mean "high (river bank)". There was a time of the personal union of the crowns of Great Britain and Hanover (1714–1837). Hanover soldiers immigrated to Great Britain, which led to the formation of the Legion of the King of Germany, which was the only German army that fought throughout the Napoleonic War with the French. They later played an important role in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. After World War II, Hanover became the capital of Lower Saxony, a state made up of several different elements and the least populous of the old Federal Republic, but also the second largest area of all 16 of the united states of Germany. Hanover has gained new capital status and is the northern end point of Germany's first (opened in 1991) - and still the longest - high-speed rail line connecting Würzburg and Hanover along the north-south ridge, which was completely overwhelmed by traffic during the German Partition and still carries considerable traffic to this day.
Hanover has become arguably the German trade fair capital in a highly competitive market, hosting the only post-war German exhibition at Expo 2000 (some buildings from this event still exist) as well as CeBit, considered the most important computer-related event in the world. The Hanover exhibition area is the largest in the world in terms of resources.
Kröpcke
Kröpcke is a large pedestrianized street in the heart of Hanover. It is the main shopping destination in Hanover, home to the Opera House, and has many places to eat. The main station of the Hanover Stadtbahn network is also located here. All Stadtbahn lines except lines 10 and 17 call at the station and this is the main point of the network exchange. It has a total of six platforms on three lines that intersect in independent tunnels. There is a large green clock in Kröpcke (Kröpcke-Uhr), Which is the perfect meeting place.
Drive
By plane
- 1 Hanover Airport (IATA: HAJ) (approximately 11 km north of the city center). This airport is served by many European airlines (via their respective hubs) and some low cost point-to-point airlines. The airport is the ninth busiest in Germany in terms of the number of passengers. Despite the relatively small number of passengers, the airport has two runways.
On the S5, S-Bahn line (stations are marked with this sign 
) trains run twice an hour from the airport to the central station (Hauptbahnhof) (and on to Hameln or Paderborn). A 2-zone ticket is required from the airport to the city center. The single ticket fare is € 3.40 (2016) and takes approximately 17 minutes. The last train leaves around midnight. The taxi ride to the city center will cost around € 20 and will take around 15 minutes.
The airport offers a one-day pre-departure check-in (18: 00-21: 00) for some airlines (Condor, Croatia Airlines, Sky Airlines and TUI).
By car
Hanover is served by an excellent German road system which runs from both Hamburg down Kassel (A7 motorway), running north and south and from Of Berlin down Düsseldorf (A2) going east and west. The city is easily reached when you leave these two highways. In Germany, autobahns do not have speed limits, unless the individual speed limits are clearly indicated. Although the restrictions on B-roads are quite high (usually 100 km / h and even higher on highway B-roads), it can go down to 50 km / h in built-up areas. The drive from Hamburg takes around an hour and a half. The journey from Berlin and Düsseldorf takes around 3 hours, but the heavy traffic (trucks) on the A2 motorway can wreak havoc on your plans.
Much of Hanover (= roughly the rectangle formed by the A2 motorway to the north and the three motorways to the west, south and east of the city center) has been designated a low emission zone (Umweltzone). All motor vehicles need a sticker (Feinstaubplakette) indicating their pollution category; this also applies to cars registered abroad. The most stringent category, marked with a green badge, is required in Hanover. Entering without a badge will cost you a fine if you are caught.
By rail

Due to its location, Hanover has good connections to all major cities in Germany via the German rail service Deutsche Bahn (DB). There are also direct trains to The Netherlands, Switzerland and Austria several times a day, including several sleeper trains operated by (Nightjet).
Hanover can also be reached by regional trains, which allows the use of cheap and popular "weekend tickets" (German: Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket) at weekends, "travel through Germany" for the rest of the week. Both apply to the entire republic and cost € 40 or € 44 (2016) for one person. Even cheaper if you're traveling in a small group of up to five people. If you are already in Lower Saxony, you can use the "Lower Saxony Ticket" (German: Niedersachsen-Ticket) for 23 € (2016).
Inter City high-speed express trains (ICE trains) will take you all over Germany to places such as: Frankfurt, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Munich, Cologne and Berlin. The journey to Hanover from Berlin takes 1 hour 30 minutes, from Hamburg 1 hour 20 minutes, from Frankfurt 2 hours 20 minutes and from Munich 4 hours 30 minutes. Prices vary depending on travel time and ticket type, such as economy ticket, freedom ticket or comfort ticket, but a freedom ticket from Berlin to Hanover costs from € 75.
Hanover is also served by Locomore on the Berlin-Stuttgart route. Tickets can be purchased through Flixbusbut not DB vending machines or the DB website. DB tickets are not valid in Locomore.

By ship
As Hanover is located on the Mittelland canal, it is theoretically possible to arrive by boat. There are actually only four cargo ports. However, if you want to travel on your own yacht, you can drop anchor at the Hanover marina, which is also located on the Mittelland canal.
Leine is a suitable place for hiking on the water. It is passable from Salzderhelden, albeit with numerous transfer points, and can travel to Schwarmstedt, from where you can row Aller all the way to the Weser.
By bike
- The Leine-Heide cycle path leads from Eichsfeld in Thuringia by Gottingen and leads you through Walsrode down Hamburg.
- The Green Ring guides you around Hanover and guides cyclists through beautiful curves. You can explore this route by map, but you can also follow blue markers (blue lanterns, curbs, piles, manhole covers, etc.) without a map.

Public transport
Hanover has a fantastic public transport network so it's best to park your car and drive. If you plan to take more than two trips by tram, bus or metro, a day ticket is the best choice by purchasing unlimited journeys on public transport. Day tickets are valid until the last connection of the day (which usually ends after midnight). Public transport has a ticketing system, but ticket checks are carried out from time to time (including late night and early morning checks). The penalty is quite high, so make sure you have your ticket at all times. Please note that some tickets will need to be verified (marked in the "blue box") and some will not, depending on the machine.
- Hannover Card 2013. The Hannover Card is issued by the Tourism Office. Includes free use of public transport and discounts on certain local attractions (eg Museums, Opera House, Grand Garden), tours and restaurants. Price: Single ticket: 1 day € 9.50, 2 days € 14.50, 3 days € 17.50; Group ticket (2-5 people): 1 day € 19.50, 3 days € 33.50.
- Tickets and regional cards. It can be confusing to understand Hanover's public transport zones. The key is to know there are "tickets" and "cards". The term "tickets" refers to tickets purchased from a vending machine or elsewhere, while "cards" are those with a (monthly) subscription. Within the city, you only need a zone 1 ticket as it already covers a large part of the city. However, for the airport you will need a dual zone ticket as it is outside Zone 1. Tickets are valid for bus, tram, S-Bahn and regional trains.

If you are returning and you still have passes or day tickets, take them with you! All tickets issued after January 1, 2002 (ie those with € currency) have unlimited validity.
By bike or on foot
There are bike paths on almost every street that runs through the city. There are no laws regarding the use of a helmet, but make sure your bike has both front and rear lights if you don't want to be stopped by the police (fine: € 10). Cycling is generally prohibited in pedestrianized areas, unless otherwise noted (

Pedestrian paths are also provided along each street and there is a pedestrianized area in front of the main station to Kröpcke (marked with this sign

It is possible to take your bike by tram or bus for free on Mon-Fri 08: 30-15: 00 and after 21:00. There is no time limit on weekends
Taxis
Unless you have limited time, a lot of heavy luggage, or are traveling on public transport stops at night, you might think twice about using a taxi as it is very expensive. However, traveling in a large group can be cheaper: you can order a 7- or 9-seater taxi over the phone and attract more people for the same price.

- 1 The great garden of Herrenhausen (by tram, go to the "Herrenhäuser Garten" stop; by car "Herrenhäuser Str. 4"). The world-famous Baroque Herrenhausen Gardens were created in the 17th century to replicate the Versailles Gardens in France. Must see! Even in winter you can still see its beauty, but it is best achieved from the end of spring to the end of summer. There is also a glistening cave decorated by Niki de Saint Phalle
- 2 Hanover Zoo A very modern zoo that is said to be one of the best in Europe. About 2,000 animals from all over the world live in six impressive zoo worlds. The ticket is expensive but should be worth a full day of fun. Day tickets cost € 25 for adults, for children 3-5 years old: € 13.50 and children 6-17 years old: € 17. Open all year round. In winter, visit WinterZoo - a cute Christmas market with an ice show, skating, water slides, food and drink etc.

- 4 New Town Hall, Trammplatz 2 See models of Hanover at four different points in history: 1689, 1939, 1945 and 2000, and then take the inclined elevator to the dome for a beautiful view of the city.
- 5 The Nanas (in Leibnizufer). Giant sculptures made by Niki de Saint Phalle.
- 6 University of Hanover, Welfengarten 1 The main building was the winter palace of the kings of Hanover. The summer palace was in the complex of the Great Garden. However, it was destroyed during World War II. Now only one wall remains.
- 7 Leibniz's House, Holzmarkt 4-6 (Holzmarkt near the Historical Museum). The house where Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz lived later in life.
- 8 City park, Theodor-Heuss-Platz 1-3 (Tram 11, direction Zoo, stop: Congress Centrum / Stadthalle). Worth a visit on a beautiful sunny day. A good place to relax with a good book and the perfect place to get away from the city center.
- 9 Tiergarten, Tiergartenstraße 149 (Tram 11, direction Zoo, stop: Congress Centrum / Stadthalle). 112 hectares of recreational forest with fallow deer
- 10 Eilenriede 650 hectares of urban forest. Very unique considering its size and city center location.
- 11 Letter Residential area near the central station. The area is popular with students. It has a nice pedestrianized street called "Lister Meile" with some small and interesting shops.

Many museums (including the Landesmuseum, Historical Museum, and Kestner Museum) can be visited for free on Friday.

There is a prehistoric section dedicated to Lower Saxony's past, including tools and weapons. You will also find coins of the Kingdom of Hanover, Prussia and the German Empire, plus everything any German museum needs, a Japanese tea house. Adults € 4-8, concessions € 3-6, families € 9-16.
- 13 Historisches Museum am Hohen Ufer, Pferdestraße 6, ☎ 49 511 168-43945. Fireworks
People in Hanover enjoy lots of fireworks throughout the year. In addition to the worldwide competitions taking place every summer, fireworks take place every evening at the Kleines Fest, every weekend at the Spring Festival (Frühlingsfest) and Oktoberfest, and on the weekend at Lake Masch. For the first two, the best place to see is inside or outside the Grand Garden, and the latter can be seen from anywhere around Masch Lake. Fireworks usually start at 10:00 PM.
Hanover is also the site of the annual world fireworks competition (or at least one of the many world competitions held throughout the year around the world) in Herrenhäuser Gärten. Six nations participate in six Saturdays, three from May to June, three from August to September.
Nearest neighborhood
- Hanover Opera House (Opernhaus). Kröpcke - Conducts many operas by international singers, as well as ballets and classical music. Operas by German composers are performed in German; Italian operas are performed with German subtitles (no English). Another additional fee for an extra long film (EUR 0.50-1).

As many large exhibitions (eg CeBIT, Biotechnica) regularly take place in Hanover, temporary job offers are always available. However, these are very popular side jobs for students, and recruitment may be limited to local residents.

- Hanover city souvenirs can be easily purchased at the tourist office.
- The official products for the 2006 World Cup or the Hanover 96 soccer team are sold at Karstadt Sport in Kröpcke.
Shopping
- Next to the central station there is a huge shopping center called Ernst August Gallerie.
- There is a supermarket (Lidl) in the Central Station. It is the only one open on Sundays. A larger supermarket open 24/7 Mon-Sat (Kaufland) leaves next to the Central Station - behind the Bus Station (on the other side of the Station if you are walking from the city center).
- In Kröpcke you can find large department stores such as Kaufhof Gallery and Karstadt.
- Check Hugendubel in Kröpcke to find popular English books. Another large bookstore is Lehmanns on Georg Straße near Steintor.
- Sports equipment can be found in SportScheck or Karstadt Sport.
- Rossmann and Douglas provide most of the personal care products. Rossmann also offers a good and cheap photo printing service. There is a Rossmann store at the main station.
- Horstman & Sander in Kröpcke (Georgstr., Direction to Steintor) is a great shop with leather goods and good quality bags, from coin purses to backpacks and very large suitcases.
- In the case of elegant boutiques, the best solution is Luise Galleries (Luisenstr.).
flea market
The flea market along the Leine River takes place every Saturday, 07:00 - 16:00. However, it is dominated by electronic goods and inflated "antiques". Beware of pickpockets.
Gastronomy
Most cafes and small restaurants accept individual payments as Germans like this system. Tips aren't mandatory, but most people do. In smaller coffee shops, if paid separately, rounding up to the next full euro is common; in larger restaurants, 10% is the best.

- Das kleine Museum, Grotestraße 10, 49 49 511 2153979. Corner pub-restaurant with large portions of excellent dishes inspired by German, French and Moroccan cuisine. The owner-run staff are warm and welcoming. The decorations match the name, filled with crocodiles on the roof.
- Gaststätte Kaiser, Schaufelder Str. 27, ☏ 49 511 164900. Traditional German cuisine of Lower Saxony in an atmospheric restaurant; extensive whiskey list. It is located close to the university and is a favorite place of visiting professors and researchers. The owner also rents out rooms upstairs.

- Mass, Georgstr. 50b, ✉ [email protected]. Afghan food. You can choose carpeted rather than tables. It is located next to the cocktail bar "Loft".
