Hotzenwald - Hotzenwald

The Hotzenwald is the southernmost branch of the Black Forest to the Upper Rhine out, bounded in the west by the Wehra, through to the east Alb and Schlucht, in the south by the Upper Rhine (without the valley locations) and in the north by the line Dead moss-St. Blasien. The Hotzenwald falls in steps from 1000 m in the northwest to about 400 m in the southwest. It forms steep drops in the west to the Wehratal with almost 600 m and in the south to the Upper Rhine at Bad Säckingen at 400 m. The highest point is the Hornberg with the spectacular all-round view of the Hornberg basin.

background

The name Hotzenwald was first coined by the poet Josef Viktor v. Scheffel 1864. The word 'Hotzen', on the other hand, is very old; it is probably derived from the word 'Houtz' - an old Alemannic expression for peasant or forests. Historically, villages and areas north of the Wehra white water river, which formerly belonged to the St. Blasien monastery, are also included in the Hotzenwald. This includes, for example, the Gersbach already mentioned above.

getting there

The Hotzenwald lies between the B317 in the west and the B500 in the East. In the south it goes B34 along the Upper Rhine.
