L'Reichenau Island is an island of Lake Constance and belongs to the Germany.
To know
Reichenau Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its abbey. It is sometimes known as a "vegetable island" because it is covered with vegetable fields and greenhouses. It is also known for its cellars.
Along the access road there is one of the largest wildlife refuges in Germany due to its favorable location along the river.
Geographical notes
At 4.5 km long and 1.5 km wide, it is the largest island on the Lake Constance (Bodensee) and is located near the lake border with the Switzerland.

Reichenau has been occupied since 724, when the abbey was founded.

By car
Reichenau is connected to the mainland by a causeway. Follow the directions from road B33.
- 1 [link not working]Port of Reichenau (On the south side of the island.). From April to October there are boat connections to Reichenau from the nearby Constance and from Radolfzell.
On the train
- 2 Reichenau station. The "Reichenau" station is located on the mainland. Once you get off you can take bus 7372 to the island.
By bike
The causeway on the island is nearly 3km long and has a dedicated paved path for cyclists, skaters and pedestrians.

By public transport
Take bus 7372 from Konstanz-Wollmatingen or Reichenau train station, make a few stops along the island:

By car
Local traffic is very low and the possibility of finding parking is very easy.
By bike
The island is a great place to visit by bike.
On foot
Although it is feasible on foot, the visit can be quite long on foot, especially if you consider the station as the starting point.

- 3 Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul (Basilika St. Peter und Paul). Featuring late Romanesque murals dating back to the early 1100s and features Rococo-style ceilings from 1750.

- 4 Abbey church of Santi Maria e Marco (Münster St. Maria und Markus), Münsterpl. 4, ☎ 49 7534 995060. Treasure: from Apr-Oct, Mon-Sat: 11: 00-12: 00 and 15: 00-16: 00. This was the abbey church and reached its present form in the 11th century. The treasury contains relics of San Marco, among other treasures. Behind the cathedral is a reconstruction of the abbey's herb garden.
- 5 Church of San Giorgio (Kirche St. Georg) (the first church you see as soon as you arrive on the island). It contains relics of St. George and wall paintings dated to the year 1000.
- 6 Museum of the church of San Giorgio. free. Small museum with explanations on the frescoes of the nearby church. Interesting only for those who want to deepen the history and understanding of the pictorial cycle of the church.
- 7 [link not working]Ruins of the Schopflen, Pirminstraße 1 (at the end of the causeway, just before you are properly on the island), ☎ 49 7534 92070. free. It originally served as a defense point for the island at low tide. Destroyed in 1366. It now has a platform that allows you to watch part of the wildlife reserve.

What to do
- 1 Rent a bike (Freizeitcenter), Zum Sandseele 1 (Close to the campsite.), ☎ 49 7534 9958777. 09:00-20:00. They have regular bikes, tandems, and trailers for children.
- Watersports. Rent a motor boat, pedal boat, canoe, kayak, sailboat or rowboat. Take windsurfing lessons. All this is offered by the Freizeitcenter located in the Sandseele campsite, Bradlengasse 24 (north-west)
- Guided tours. Island tours are offered daily from the Freizeitcenter located in the Sandseele campsite.
- Ice-skating. If you happen to come during the winter with the frozen lake in the bay next to the island, you can skate, play hockey and buy mulled wine and currywurst from the ice stalls.

This company offers Rhine cruises from Schaffhausen to Kreuzlingen passing by several locations including Stein am Rhein, the island of Reichenau and Constance on the Lake Constance. Cruises run from April to October. From Schaffhausen to Kreuzlingen the journey takes about 4 hours and 45 minutes, the return one hour less.
Shopping
The island is full of vegetable sellers, being produced directly and without intermediate steps, the prices are very low. You will find many tables with the indication of the price and the relative envelopes. Even if there is no one physically there, you take the product and put the money in the special box. Everything is based on trust, let's avoid betraying it!
