Janowiec is a historical place in Poland in the voivodeship Lublin. The place is in the Lesser Poland Vistula Gorge on the western slope above the Vistula and is known for one of the largest castle ruins in Europe.
background
The place emerged as a trading center on the Vistula. It was mentioned in a document in 1325 and received city rights in 1537. After the Third Partition of Poland in 1795, the place came successively to the Habsburgs, the Duchy of Warsaw and finally to Congress Poland, which was part of the Russian Empire. After the First World War he became Polish again.
The castle was built by Mikołaj Firlej from 1508. The Italian Santi Gucci is continuing the expansion in the style of the Lublin Renaissance. In 1606 the complex became the scene of the peace agreement between King Sigismund III Vasa and the rebels around Mikołaj Zebrzydowski. The castle was sacked and burned by the Swedes in 1655. The Dutch Tylman van Gameren carried out the reconstruction in the Baroque style. In 1783 the then owner Jerzy Lubomirski gambled away the castle while playing cards. The castle fell into disrepair from the 19th century.
