The first mention of the village of Gassen comes from the year 1321. Until 1642 the village belonged to the Lords of Wiedebach. After the male line of the Wiedebach had expired, Lieutenant Colonel Rudolf von Bünau became the new landlord. The Saxon nobleman, who was appointed governor of Lower Lusatia in 1656, acquired additional villages and allowed Protestant religious refugees from Silesia to settle. The newly created place received on January 24, 1660 by Duke Christian I. awarded the city charter. The village and the manor were henceforth as Old streets designated and remained independent. Until 1855 the city belonged to the manor and the landlord was responsible for the confirmation of the council members Seven Years War the Bünauer lost their goods in the Lausitz. Abraham Gottfried Philipp from Rabenau became master of Gassen in 1776 and built the castle from 1780, which has housed the town hall since 1881. In 1815 Gassen came to Prussia as part of Niederlausitz and in 1818 it became part of the Sorau district.
In the middle of the 19th century industrial companies settled in the streets, the best known of which was the one founded in 1856 Machine factory and iron foundry Theodor Flöther. In 1944, a satellite camp of the Groß Rosen concentration camp built. After the Second World War, the city became part of Poland.
