The Polish name of the city Świebodzin is derived from the Polish family name Świeboda from, which has a reference to the Polish word freedom, swoboda, owns,[1] and has been occupied in different variants since 1302.

The (then) village was first mentioned in the 12th century, and a fortress was built here in the first half of the 13th century. As it is today, the city has always been on the trade routes to Brandenburg, Pomerania and Silesia, which brought it an economic boom at the end of the Middle Ages. Important branches of the economy were textile production, beer breweries, craft and trade.

After the victory of Frederick II of Prussia in the first Silesian War (1740–1742), the city became part of Prussia. The then administrative district was Frankfurt (Oder) in the Prussian province. The status remained until the end of the Second World War in 1945. In the middle of the 19th century, the city was connected to the Frankfurt (Oder) -Posen railway line (1849), and new businesses were set up for textile manufacturing, mechanical engineering and food production.

At the Yalta Conference in February 1945, the new German-Polish border on the Oder and Neisse was determined. As a result, the city came under Polish administration. The Germans were driven out of the city as a result of Poland's shift to the west. The Polish population settled there. After the war, industry recovered only slowly. Breweries disappeared, new factories for electromechanical products, sawn timber and furniture emerged. After the social upheaval around 1990, some foreign companies settled here, which operated among other things, discount supermarkets.

With the consecration of the world's largest statue of Christ in November 2010, it is hoped that thousands of pilgrims and tourists will visit.
