Żary(German: Sorau) is a city in the voivodeship Lebus between the Bober and the Lusatian Neisse in Poland. The place is in the Lower Lusatia in the border area of the regions Lausitz and Lower Silesia and is particularly famous for its historic old town with the Biberstein Castle and the Promnitz Castle, as well as the forest area to the south Zielony Las(Sorau Forest) known. In addition, the place offers good excursion possibilities, for example to Żagań and Iłowa.

The first mentions of the place date back to 1007, the town charter was granted in 1260. In 1888 Gustaw Otremba from Zgorzelec founded his porcelain factory here on Schmidtstrasse (ul. Górnośląska). Later it belonged to the Carstens empire. After the death of Krystian Henryk Carstens, Ernst Carstens continued. A total of around 18,000 product designs were created, with a pronounced change in style following around 1918. The history of the Sorauer porcelain factory ended with the Second World War. in the Museum of the Silesian-Lusatian Border Region there is an exhibition on Sorau porcelain.

The place is southwest of Zielona Góra direction Zgorzelec. There are regional train connections to and from Zielona Góra, Zgorzelec, Wroclaw, Legnica and Tuplice. Tuplice is on the railway line in the further direction Forst (Lausitz), which is served twice a day from the Polish side. From there there is a connection cottbus. At the weekend, the culture train also runs from Berlin to Wroclawthat stops in place. - 1 Sacred Heart Church (Kościół Najświętszego Serca Pana Jezusa w Żarach), Card., Plac Wyszyńskiego 4, Żary. Tel.: 48 68 363 40 00. The former main and parish church is a brick building in the Gothic style that was built in the 13th century. Inside is the Promnitz Chapel from the years 1670-1672.
- 2 Marienkirche (Kościół Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny w Żarach), Rafała Kalinowskiego 7, 68-200 Żary. Tel.: 48 68 479 43 01. The church was built in the neo-Gothic style between 1914 and 1917 by the Berlin architect Wolfgang Wagner on the initiative of the Catholic priest Karl Ponsens. It is the first Catholic church in the city to be built after the Reformation. The original interior design is still preserved. There are stained glass windows and vaults with Art Nouveau elements.
- 3 Garrison Church (Kościół Podwyższenia Krzyża Świętego w Żarach, Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross), Kaczy Rynek 10, 68-200 Żary. The Franciscans who came to the city in 1264 built next to theirs monastery the Church of St. Barbara and later the Chapel of St. Anne. In 1549, however, the church and monastery fell victim to a major fire. Only ruins remain of it. Almost nothing is known about the history of the monastery. The reconstruction of the church began in 1727 under Erdmann II. Von Promnitz in the Baroque style, the original bell of which is still preserved today. The church in the southeastern part of Kunice (Kunzendorf) was built from 1895/1896 and designed by the architect Gamper. The consecration took place on November 10th, 1896, the 413rd anniversary of Martin Luther. In 1945 she became Catholic. The interior design was retained.

- 6 Dewin, Pack and Biberstein lock (Zamek Dewinów). The beginnings of the Gothic castle go back to the 13th century and are related to the founding of the city in 1260. This was a building of three floors and a tower. A renovation took place from 1540 to 1549 in the style of the Italian Renaissance. The last two noblemen at that time were Hieronymus and Christoph Biberstein. The castle tower was increased by 1700. The last Promnitz Johann Erdmann III. gave up the hierarchy in Żary at the beginning of the 19th century. It served as a prison from 1825, and from 1930-1945 it housed the Żary County Museum of Local History. It has been privately owned since 1992 and is being restored. The plan is to accommodate a restaurant, the stand and the local history museum there in the future.
- 7 Promnitz Castle (Pałac Promnitzów), Zamkowa 1B, 68-200 Żary. The baroque palace was built by Erdmann II of the Promnitz family in the years 1705-1726. The architects were Giovani Simonetti, Carl Spanninger and August Beer. Georg Philipp Telemann was Kapellmeister here from 1704 to 1706 as the successor to Caspar Prinz. The palace complex also included gardens, a park, the riding stables and a pleasure and hunting palace. In the future, a trading gallery and a hotel are planned in the castle.

- 11 Woodstock stop (Przystanek Woodstock), Bolesława Chrobrego 16, 68-200 Żary. Jurek Owsiak and the Fundacja Wielkiej Orkiestry Świątecznej Pomocy (Foundation of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Aid) organized the largest festivals in Europe under the name "Woodstock Stop" from 1997 to 2003 on the former Żary airfield. It is estimated that the festivals together had around 1.5 million visitors. The site has now become an industrial park and the festival is after that Kostrzyn nad Odrą drawn. As a souvenir, statues of two musicians were placed in the pedestrian zone of Żary.
- 12 Georg-Philipp-Telemann-Monument (Ławeczka Georga Philippa Telemanna w Żarach). From 1704 on, Georg-Philipp-Telemann was court conductor in Sorau for four years under Count Erdmann II von Promnitz. His compositions from this period also contain elements of Sorbian folk music. - A great opportunity to hike offers the 16 Zielony Las (Sorau Forest, Green Forest), a forest area south of the city with a varied terrain, beautiful beech trees and a lookout tower from which you can even see the Śnieżka.
