Other goals

Rothschönberger Stolln

It is not a sight in itself, as it is not open to the public, but it is still worth mentioning Rothschönberger Stolln. The 13.9 km long drainage tunnel was excavated between 1844 and 1882 and served to drain the Freiberg mining area into the Triebisch, a tributary of the Elbe. The tunnel starts at Neck bridge in the valley of the Freiberg Mulde and leads northeast via Reinsberg and Neukirchen to Rothschönberg.

background

The association crosses the boundaries of the districts of Döbeln, Freiberg and Meißen and was founded in 1999. It includes the communities and cities of Großschirma, Hainichen, Ketzerbachtal, Niederstriegis, Nossen, Reinsberg, Roßwein, Striegistal and Tiefenbach.

getting there

By train

The Railway line Dresden – Meißen – Döbeln, which runs through the middle of the monastery district (Nossen, Roßwein), is no longer served by passengers. Therefore, Hainichen is the only train station that is still in operation. The City-Bahn line C15 from Chemnitz goes there every hour (journey time 30 minutes). The nearest train stations are in Meißen or Triebischtal (half-hourly S-Bahn from Dresden), Döbeln (hourly regional trains from Riesa, Chemnitz and Leipzig) and Freiberg (hourly regional express from Dresden, Chemnitz and Hof). From there you continue by bus (see the following section).

By bus

The previous rail connection from Dresden has been replaced by bus line 424, which runs every hour. The journey from Dresden Central Station to the market square in Nossen takes 50 minutes. Bus line 412 also runs every hour from the Meißen bus station to Nossen (journey time 40 minutes); Line 750 every hour from Freiberg to Siebenlehn (25 minutes), Nossen (35 minutes), Roßwein (50 minutes) and Niederstrigis or in the opposite direction from Döbeln to Niederstrigis (15 minutes), Roßwein (25 minutes) and Nossen (40 minutes) .

mobility

Roßwein town hall

The region of the Altzella monastery district belongs to the network area of the Verkehrsverbund Mittelachsen (VMS). Association tickets with the corresponding tariff zones are valid on all means of transport. The Saxony (Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia) ticket is also valid on all VMS means of transport.

The regional train lines within the region have all been discontinued. The most important and most frequent bus routes are the 750 (Freiberg – Großvoigtsberg – Siebenlehn – Nossen – Roßwein – Niederstriegis – Döbeln, every hour) and 640 (Hainichen – Tiefenbach – Roßwein, roughly every two hours). Most of the other bus routes only run a few times a day. Instead of buses, so-called call-line taxis are sometimes used, which you have to order at least one hour before departure.

The (Freiberg) Muldental cycle path connects Großschirma, Siebenlehn, Nossen and Roßwein.

Tourist Attractions

Romanesque portal of the former Altzella monastery

The former Altzella monastery near Nossen, donated to Benedictines in 1145, converted into a Cistercian monastery in 1175, distinguished itself in the 14th century by a flourishing monastery school (the first educational institution of its kind in Saxony) and was secularized in 1544. The burial chapel, which Margrave Friedrich the Serious built in 1347, and in which all Meissen princes from Otto the Rich to Friedrich the Strict rest, was destroyed by lightning in 1599, but replaced by a new building in 1787. Among the numerous ruins that can be found in the park, the large monastery gate, a Romanesque building from the 12th century, deserves a special mention. The monastery park is open from April 1 to October 31, Tuesday to Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday / Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Waldheimer Straße bus stop is only 200 meters from the monastery wall. There is an hourly bus line 424 from Dresden (journey time approx. 50 minutes from Dresden Hbf) and every two hours line 750 from Roßwein (journey time 12 minutes), Döbeln (35 minutes) and Freiberg (40 minutes). Several lines (at least once an hour) go there in 5 minutes from the market in Nossen.

Heynitz Castle

That is in the northeast of the monastery district Heynitz Castle, which has been privately owned again since 2004. Heynitz can be reached from the B 101 from Nossen to Meißen. Just before Katzenberg, turn right. The castle and town can also be reached via the national long-distance hiking trail Ostsee-Saaletalsperren (Rothschönberg – Nossen section).

activities

On the Zellsteig in the Zellwald
  • Zellwald hiking area: The Zellwald has an extensive network of hiking trails.
  • Hike from Nossen to Roßwein (9 km): This is a suggested hike that runs exclusively south of the Mulde and mainly through forest areas. From the Nossen train station you go over the Bismarckstraße to the roundabout, cross the railway facilities and then follow the railway tracks on a path towards the west. After one kilometer you come to a road that leads over the Mulde. Turn left onto the street, walk under the disused railway line to Riesa and, after crossing the railway to Roßwein, reach the walls of the Altzella monastery. After reaching the town of Altzella, turn right onto the field path, which first runs along the edge of the forest and later directly in the forest. At Gleisberg-Marbach you bend - not like the one below literature The listed hiking map "Monastery district Altzella" suggests - turn right onto the road and shortly afterwards turn left again onto the path to Kummershain. After only 300 meters, an inconspicuous path branches off from the road, which you now follow. Mining was carried out in the Gersdorfer Wäldchen until the 19th century, which is reminiscent of the signposted evidence. You leave the Muldental via an educational mining path and come south to Gersdorf, where you turn right onto Dorfstraße. The village road in turn leads back to the edge of the forest and then makes a striking left curve. We go straight into the forest and reach the remains of the Gersdorfer Mühle, where we turn left. Soon the forest is deserted and you can see the skyline of Roßwein above a garden colony. Our goal: the train station, cannot be missed any more and we take the train back to Nossen.
  • Hike from Nossen to Döbeln (18 km): This hike leads away from the larger forests, which has the advantage of better views. Starting at the Nossen train station, you first walk to the roundabout and then via Döbelner Straße out of town to Rhäsa. In Rhäsa, turn left into Bodenbacher Weg and after crossing the Nossen – Lommatzsch – Riesa railway line, which is only used by tank trucks, you reach Bodenbach. Now it goes - again on paved paths - to Gleisberg, a long place. Before turning right into the street towards Wetterwitz in the center of the village, we recommend a short detour to a residential property on which a private person has set up a small mini world (including the Eiffel Tower and Lübeck Holstentor). On the Wetterwitzer Straße again, turn left onto the after leaving the village Drowninga dirt road. To the right of the dirt road a wind farm, to the left a beautiful view over the Mulde valley to the Gersdorfer grove. The cattle drive ends in Seifersdorf, where you turn right onto the road from Roßwein and after 50 meters turn left again. The following path leads to Haßlau, whereby the first part is field path, the second part is paved. In Haßlau you cross the village road and first take the road to Zweinig, then (from the turn to the right) over an asphalt forest path to the edge of the Striegistäler landscape protection area. Here a narrow forest path leads down to a high forest level into the Mulde valley; the Niederstriegiser district America is reached. Not as well known as the America at Penig, but here, too, one is obviously proud of the place name, which is proven by a pinned place name sign. Those who are already tired here can take the train back to Nossen after crossing the Mulde at the Niederstriegis stop. Otherwise, after crossing the railway line, turn right into the village path and walk to the Döbeln Ost stop, either right or left of the Mulde. The route on the left is shorter, but leads along the moderately traveled road from Niederstriegis to Döbeln. The return trip to Nossen costs € 3.60 at the normal rate.
Reinsberg Castle
  • City and community festivals, including the Roßwein school and home festival that takes place every five years.
  • Bird shooting in Reinsberg
  • Flower and garden show in the Altzella monastery park.
  • Camellia Festival At the beginning of March each year in Roßwein.
