background

Tatra Mountains from the local mountain Jaworzyna

Krynica is one of the most famous health resorts in Poland. It is also known as the Polish Davos, as a conference of the political and economic giants of Central and Eastern Europe takes place here every year. There are lifts and cable cars to the surrounding peaks, from which a beautiful view over the Beskydy Mountains to High Tatras results.

Krynica was first mentioned in a document in 1547. The medicinal springs were discovered in the 17th century. With the first Polish partition in 1772, the place came to the Habsburgs. The bathing facilities were greatly expanded at the end of the 18th century. In the 19th century, Krynica became a popular seaside resort. Numerous villas, guest houses and a theater were built. In 1889 Krynica received city rights, and in 1916 the railway reached the place. After the First World War, Krynica retained its importance in the now Polish state. In the interwar period, international sporting events also took place, including the world ice hockey championships in 1931. After the Second World War and the German occupation, the spa facilities continued to be used in the People's Republic of Poland. In 1958 and 1962 the Luge World Championships took place in Krynica.

Krynica is one of the most famous winter sports and health resorts in the region. The old Kurhaus was built in 1889. A number of wooden villas, mostly built in the Swiss style, also date from this period. For several years now, the place has been adorned with a 2200 meter long gondola lift that leads to the summit of Jaworzyna Krynicka (1114 m). There is usually good snow conditions there from December to April. There is a large ice rink in the village and a year-round toboggan run as well as numerous ski and snowboard schools.
