Laives (Leifers in German) is a city of Trentino Alto Adige.

To know

The proximity to Bolzano has determined a considerable building development to meet the needs of those who want to move from the capital without however straying too far from its services. The continuous increase of inhabitants has led Laives to be the fourth most populous center of theSouth Tyrol after Bolzano, Merano is Bressanone. Its development was crowned with the attribution of the title of city in 1985, making it the youngest city in theSouth TyrolMore than two thirds of the inhabitants (71.50%) are native speakers of Italian, less than one third (27.99%) of German and 0.51% Ladin.

Geographical notes

It is located less than 10 kilometers south of Bolzano, on the eastern side of the Adige Valley, at the confluence of the Adige and Isarco, in the district Oltradige-Bassa Atesina The inhabited center is crossed by the Rio Vallarsa.

Background

The beauty and fertility of the land where Laives stands have meant that princes and castellans chose to live there, and the monasteries cultivated their vineyards there. Despite the swamps that up to 140 years ago covered the Adige Valley, the region was soon populated, especially in the surrounding areas.

Some excavations carried out at Castel Varco (German Laimburg), near Vadena, Bronzolo and Laives, have brought to light some interesting finds dating back to 900 BC, most of which (funerary urns, bronze and iron hair clips, jewels and coins, the latter concentrated in the Reif's treasure) are now kept in the Archaeological Museum ofSouth Tyrol, together with Ötzi, the Iceman, where some reconstructions of ancient settlements can also be admired.

Further evidence of a prehistoric settlement is represented by the fortress, surrounded by a valley, of "Trens Birg" (1200 m) on Montelargo (Breitenberg) above Laives. Of this settlement, from the more recent stone age, remains of walls and houses are still visible. The ridge of Monte di Mezzo south of the Kreith pass is also designated as a prehistoric area, following various findings at the ruins of Castelchiaro (German Leuchtenburg), the Rosszähne (Horse Teeth) and the Gmundener Kopf (Monte di Now).

The first certain news of the locality of Laives dates back to 1189, when for the first time it is mentioned in official documents, of which there is historical mention. Bassa Atesina acquired more and more importance, as the main link between north and south, several nobles soon moved there. Thus, numerous castles and fortifications were built, some of which still exist today: the "Tinzelleiten" Tower in the vicinity of San Giacomo, the church of San Pietro above Laives, where Castel Liechtenstein once stood, the ruins of Laimburg and Leuchtenburg on Monte di Mezzo (Mitterberg ) south of Vadena, as well as 58 other ruins of manors scattered south of BolzanoAs an autonomous municipality, Laives appears for the first time only in 1819.

What see

parish church
  • 1 parish church. Located in the center of Laives, it has two patrons: Sant'Antonio Abate and San Nicoló. The building in its current form dates back to the years 1852-1853 when the pre-existing building, instead of being demolished, was transformed into the apse of the new temple, while the bell tower dates back to 1250. Since 1787 there is the Pietà di Pietralba, a statuette of 16 cm representative alabaster Sorrowful Mary. From 2000 to 2003 the church was enlarged with a very modern and original architectural body, by the architects Höller & Klotzner of Merano. The end of the renovation of the ancient building dates back to 2011.
  • Churches of the hamlets. In the hamlet of San Giacomo (St. Jakob) we find a Gothic-shaped church, which however is closed today for the construction of the new Parish Church.
Still interesting are the church of Sant'Enrico in La Costa and the 4 Peterköfele church, which dates back to 1300, built on a rocky spur overlooking Laives, at the beginning of the old path that leads to Pietralba. The church also preserves the remains of the Liechtenstein castle, which stood just above the municipal capital.
Also worth mentioning are the chapel of the new cemetery in Laives city and the parish church of San Giuseppe the craftsman in Pineta.
  • Gutleben farm (Gutlebenhof). In Laives stands the imposing Gutleben farm (Gutlebenhof), dating back to the Middle Ages. In 2011 it became the subject of building speculation.
  • Maso Renner (Rennerhof) (in the hamlet of Pineta). It is one of the most prestigious farms in theSouth Tyrol and is under guardianship. It seems to date back to the 16th century if we consider the mural sundial that appears on the facade of a present building; however, more remote origins cannot be excluded. This farm is surrounded by many legends about dragons and mythical creatures. The inhabitants of the farm have always been called the Renneri.
In the last 30 years, the current owners have provided for the restoration of various works of art and the cultivation of the plantations.
