Lauco is a center of the Friuli Venezia Giulia.

To know

The country is part of the club of Authentic villages of Italy.

Its territory is affected by the Natural park of the Carnic hills.

Geographical notes

Lauco rises at 719 m a.s.l., in the alpine region of Carnia, perched on a plateau that extends from Mount Arvènis (1,968 m) to the rocky spur overlooking the Tagliamento, from which it dominates the valley below with the nearby village of Villa Santina.

Background

The name of Lauco is mentioned for the first time in 914, but some finds (a sword with a sheath and a razor, dating back to the first half of the 2nd century BC), are traces of a presence already in Roman times.

There are also, just before the town of Allegnidis, finds of pre-Roman tombs. With the Romans it was part of the X region Venetia et Histria.

The territory belonged in the Middle Ages to the Patriarchate of Aquileia, then passed in 1420 to the Republic of Venice and in 1797 to the Habsburg Empire. Annexed to Italy in 1866, after the third war of independence, it was affected by the advance of the Austro-Hungarians from 1917 to 1918, during the First World War, following the Italian defeat in Caporetto, and again to that between 1944 and 1945.

How to orient yourself

The municipal territory also includes the hamlets of Allegnidis, Avaglio, Buttea, Trava and Vinaio. Then there are the small villages of Chiassis (above and below), Sot Crez, Isimidi, Chiauians, Porteal, Pridignel, Runchia, Plugna, Fuessa, Uerpa, Vas, Pesmolet, Val di Lauco, Chiamps and Trischiamps.

  • Church of San Michele (just before the hamlet of Trava.). Fifteenth century, with a small bell gable.
  • Gorge of the Vinadia (Tor di Meni from l'ors). A canyon over 200 m deep, formed by the millennial erosion of the waters of the Vinadia stream.

Events and parties

  • Way of the cross (in the hamlet of Vinaio). Simple icon time.svgin December.
  • Tir des cidules. That of the Tîr des cidulis (also cidulas, cidules, cidulos or pirulas, depending on the local Friulian dialect) is an ancient tradition of Carnia, probably of Celtic origin, held in many countries of this Alpine region.
From a modest relief near the town the local boys (the so-called cidulârs, who in some places, before the abolition of the military service, were conscripts), after lighting a fire visible from the town, launch las cidulos, that is wooden wheels (usually fir or beech) which are set on fire. According to tradition, each launch is accompanied by a nursery rhyme (raganizes) auspicious or humorous towards a real or fictional couple, or the revelation of a love of others kept hidden up to that moment.
