Background

Some findings (a polished stone ax found on the hill of San Rocco, a bronze ax in the hamlet of Esemon di Sotto, and various Roman remains), testify that Enemonzo is certainly one of the ancient settlements of Carnia. However, the name of the town is mentioned for the first time only around 1000 as Enemum. In 35 BC after the subjugation of the Gauls by the Roman legions, Enemonzo became part of the X REGIO VENETIAE ET HISTRIAE.

From 1017 to 1420 it was part of the Patriarchate of Aquileia, knowing the most flourishing period of its ancient history. In 1420 with the fall of the patriarchate it passed under the Venetian domination until 1797, the year of the Treaty of Campoformio which established the passage of the whole Veneto (which then also included the Friuli) to the Habsburg Empire.

Returning to Italy in 1866, in 1917 the town was hit by the retreat of Caporetto, and many inhabitants abandoned their homes to take refuge on the other side of the Piave. During the Second World War, like all of Carnia it had to undergo the invasion of the Cossacks, perpetrators of violence, theft and raids, who had to leave the country in May 1945.
