Verzegnis (Verzegnis in standard Friulian, Verzegnas in Carnic Friulian) is a center of the Friuli Venezia Giulia.
Its territory is affected by the Natural park of the Carnic hills.
To know
Chiaulis is the seat of the Town Hall; the municipality of is in fact a common scattered which takes its name from Mount Verzegnis (1915 above sea level) which overlooks the four hamlets.
Background
An interesting historical reference on the ancient role of Verzegnis in Carnia is represented by the remains of a tower (on the Mazeit hill, in the hamlet of Villa) brought to light in archaeological excavations conducted mainly in the two-year period 1989-1990 and resumed in 2000. The studies conducted on the finds found temporally place the construction at the turn of the twelfth and the thirteenth century AD It is believed that the tower was part of the fortification system erected in defense of the eastern Alpine passes, since its strategic position allowed the control of the upper part of the Tagliamento river valley, of the southern access to the road to Iulium Carnicum and to Norico. di San Martino a Villa was mentioned as a parish church for the first time in 1072.
The possessed of Verzegnis
Verzegnis is known for the events that occurred in the winter of 1878. A local girl, a certain Margherita Vidusson, manifested that she was possessed by the devil, giving rise to an epidemic that gradually involved 24 other girls and a carabiniere: the possessed screamed and they cursed in unknown languages and found themselves endowed with an extraordinary and animalistic strength. It all ended with the intervention of the Udine doctor Giuseppe Chiappolino.
The novel by Pietro Spirito speaks of these events The possessed of Verzegnis and are reprized in a play, "Indemoniate", signed by Giuliana Musso and Carlo Tolazzi.
Verzegnis capital of Carnia
During the Second World War, a singular event took place in Verzegnis: from October 1944 to April 1945 the town was occupied by a Cossack regiment, becoming the "center" of Carnia. The Cossacks had been recruited by the Nazis to counter the partisan movement, which was very active in Carnia. More than 1500 people, including soldiers and civilians, arrived in Verzegnis with horses, camels and herds and established there the headquarters of the main command of the Terek-Stavropol Regiment. In the promises of the Germans to the Cossacks in exchange for their collaboration, Carnia should have become Kosakenland in North-Italien and according to this project, they settled there in the southern part of Carnia, electing as their "capital" the village of Villa di Verzegnis, where the supreme leader of the Cossack forces Pëtr Nikolaevič Krasnov was staying.
The Cossack adventure in Carnia, with particular attention to the events concerning Verzegnis, is effectively narrated by Patrizia Deotto in her historical essay "Stanitsa Tèrskaja. The Cossack illusion of a land.", Based on various sources, archival documents , publications and direct testimonies. The narration in the novel "The army of lost rivers" by Carlo Sgorlon is linked to the presence of the Cossacks in Carnia.

Its municipal territory includes the hamlets of Chiaicis, Intissans, Villa and the localities of Assais, Avons, Dueibis, Fuignis, Marzovalis, Pozzis, Pusea, Riviasio, Santo Stefano and Sella Chianzutan.
The municipal seat is in the town of Chiaulis.
In the past there were five other inhabited centers: Assais (Dassaias), Dueibis (Dueibas), Pusea (Pusjea), Pozzis (Poças) and Fuignis (Fuignas). These villages are located in rather isolated wooded areas: this is one of the reasons why they were definitively abandoned during the twentieth century by the original inhabitants, usually with a descent towards the larger hamlets. Recently some houses in Pozzis have been restored mainly by non-residents in Verzegnis. Assais is the only one not to be completely uninhabited but some people live there.
In the locality of Sella Chianzutan (the town at the highest altitude: between 950-1250 meters), once from December to March, ski facilities were opened (two downhill slopes, one for cross-country skiing and one for sledges) but they are no longer used.

What see
- 1 Parish church of San Martino (at Villa di Verzegnis). Built on previous buildings, it is one of the 11 ancient parish churches of Carnia. The current building dates back to the thirteenth century, renovated in the eighteenth century on a project by Domenico Schiavi.
- 2 Verzegnis Lake (near the hamlet of Chiaicis). It was formed following the construction of a dam on the Ambiesta stream. It measures about one and a half kilometers in length and has a depth of about 40 meters. Although not suitable for swimming, it is still a destination for fishing activities, walks along its banks, mountain biking and picnics.
- Art Park (Villa of Verzegnis). Open air museum of contemporary art conceived and promoted by Egidio Marzona. Part of the museum system of Carnia, the Art Park can be visited all year round, without time constraints and exhibits works by internationally renowned artists:
- Street of marble. the initiative is aimed at enhancing the disused plants of the "Lavoreit Ros" quarry. The historical marble route downstream is in fact constituted by a cableway, which is no longer used (currently transport takes place by road along a road that descends from the quarry to Sella Chianzutan). The "way" starts from Sella Chianzutan (in the locality of "la Canaleta") and crosses the "Mongranda", "Presaldon" (today an alpine refuge) and "Val" (disused but undergoing restructuring) huts.
- Cave of the "Magico Alverman" (cave of the "Riu Muart" (Rio Morto)). Censored in 1995, the Magico Alverman cave is the most interesting of the 42 known caves of Mount Verzegnis and stretches over a length of 1308 meters.
- Aga dal paradîsj (Water of paradise). On the road that connects Villa Santina and Chiaicis, above Riviasio, there is a source of water considered healthy, so much so that it has earned the nickname "water of paradise". Although it has always been known by the population of Verzegnis, it had undergone a progressive maintenance abandonment since the postwar period, in recent times thanks to the initiative of some volunteers, the source has been restored and both residents and foreigners regularly draw rumor of its existence.

In the event of a tie, the outcome of the direct match is taken into account. The prize is also awarded to the top scorer of the tournament.
