Lindenberg is located in the center of the Westallgäu and has been a climatic health resort since 1923. Lindenberg became known as the town of horse traders and straw hats. Initially a sideline for the farmers, from 1755 through the "Lindenberger Hut-Compagnie" a profitable business in the markets in the area. In 1815 more than 300 families were involved in the production of straw hats, and in the following years a number of hat companies were founded. In 1900 around 4 million hats were produced in Lindenberg and the surrounding area. After World War I, straw hats went out of fashion, and felt hats were produced in their place. After the Second World War, hats went out of fashion and numerous companies had to close. That’s left Hat museum in a former hat factory as well as the annual Hat day, in the course of which a German hat queen is chosen.
