Introduction
Background
Dante Alighieri was born in Florence in 1265 in a family of the small nobility. He carried out grammatical and rhetorical studies and had meetings with important figures of the culture of the time. He studied philosophy and began participation in public life. He had served the City of Florence in 1289 fighting a Campaldino against the Arezzo and a Caprona against the Pisans. At that time the Florence Guelph was divided into the Black faction (headed by Donated and supported by the pope) and in the White faction (headed by You look for). Dante joined the Whites and opposed the pope's interference Boniface VIII in city life. He had the position of prior in 1300 and was sent to Rome as ambassador to the pope in 1301, when Charles of Valois, brother of the king of France and supporter of the Blacks, induced by Pope Boniface VIII to restore peace between the two sides, entered Florence and the Blacks seized power. Dante, in 1302, was first condemned to exile and then to death. He began a long pilgrimage around the Peninsula and he never returned to his hometown. He died of malaria a Ravenna in 1321 and in this city his is found tomb.
