Mae Sai(Thai: แม่สาย, IPA: [mɛ̂ː sǎːj]) is a city in Northern Thailand.

Mae Sai is the city at the border crossing too Tachilek (Myanmar). Mae Sai hugs a chain of hills for a long time. The last kilometers to the border are populated with countless traders. Goods from Yunnan (China), Myanmar and Thailand are offered.

getting there

Not only at the border crossing, but also further inland there are roadblocks by the police, where passport controls are carried out regularly. B. makes from Chiang Rai to Mae Sai and does not intend to cross the border, always carry your passport with you.

By bus

There are bus connections with Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai.
From Chiang Mai Various companies operate from the Arcade Bus Station with different bus classes at prices from around 70 baht. Departure times from around 6 a.m. every hour (example: Green bus, VIP bus, departure: 9.30 am, travel time around 4½ hours with a stop in Chiang Rai around 12 noon, 319 baht. A small snack and two drinks are included)

From Chiang Rai (Bus terminal 1 in the city center) every 20-30 minutes minivans to the Mae Sai bus station for 50 baht. The journey takes about an hour.

Greenbus also offers direct connections from Bangkok (Departure from Bangkok 3:50 p.m., travel time a good 14½ hours, fare 581 Baht), Northeast Thailand (Bueng Kan, Nong Khai, Udon Thani, Khon Kaen) as Mae Sot and Tak to Mae Sai.

View from Wat Phra That Doi Wao
  • There is a gold-decorated one next to the border crossing 1 goal with the Thai inscription เหนือ สุด ยอด แดน สยาม ("The northernmost point of Siam"), which serves as a photo backdrop.
  • 2  Wat Phra That Doi Wao (วัด พระ ธาตุ ดอย เวา). Temple on a hill, the symbol of which is a larger-than-life scorpion statue. There is also a lookout point with a great view of the surrounding mountains, the valley of the Ruak river and the twin cities of Mae Sai and Tachilek.

Immediately on the Thai-Burmese border there is a large market where you can buy cheap textiles, electronic products and plastic odds and ends from China, but also high-quality jewelry from Burma as well as wood and silk work from the region.

  • Kuai Tiao Kai Tun Mara Sot (ก๋วยเตี๋ยว ไก่ ตุ๋ มะระ สด), Th. Phahonyothin (on the Asian Highway, a few kilometers south of the border crossing). Inexpensive restaurant popular with locals for noodles with braised chicken. The chicken feet are considered a special delicacy, but can also be left out if desired.

nightlife

Nightlife doesn't really exist, at least on weekdays. From around 10 p.m. the countless vendors who populate the main street during the day pack up and apart from a handful of mobile food stalls and every now and then a small bar, nothing is open anymore. For the last 3 km to the border there isn't even a bigger restaurant.

Wat Phra That Doi Tung
  • "Golden Triangle" (Thailand-Laos-Myanmar border triangle) near Sop Ruak, Chiang Saen district, 27 km southwest of Mae Sai on road no. 1290
  • Doi Tung (Amphoe Mae Fa Luang), 28 km southwest of Mae Sai, 1389 meter high mountain, on the top of which is the Buddhist temple Wat Phra That Doi Tung. Also on the mountain is the Royal Villa Doi Tung, a former residence of the princess mother Srinagarindra (1900–1995), with gardens, coffee and tea plantations
  • Choui Fong tea plantation (ไร่ ชา ฉุย ฟ ง), 97 Mu 8 Pa Sang, Mae Chan Amphoe (about 30 km southwest of Mae Sai; 5 km off National Road 1 / Asian Highway). The tea terraces are very nice to look at and offer a great view of the surrounding mountains. There is a bar and direct sale of tea and souvenirs on site.
