Geographical notes
Masainas is located in the Sulcis and borders on Giba, Piscinas, Sant'Anna Arresi is Teulada.
Background
Masainas has ancient origins dating back to the Neolithic, in the area of Is Solinas', in fact, human settlements have been found. In later times the territory of Masainas was affected by Nuragic settlements, by Phoenician-Punic infiltrations and, between the third and second centuries BC, by the Roman penetration, following the conquest of Solki, today's Sant'Antioco.
In fact, remains have been found between Masainas and Giba that suggest a terracotta tool factory dating back to the period of the Roman penetration into the Sardinian hinterland. From fortuitous excavations stone sarcophagi dating back to the Roman age have been found, the particularity of which is that these burials were made in sandy soil and therefore unique in Sardinia. Also in the locality of "Is Manigas" coins were found presumably indicating the presence of a Roman site. In the locality of "Serra lepuris" two tombs were found carved into the rock, made as a sepulcher and closed by a large stone. Most of the artifacts found in the municipal area are now in the archaeological museum of Cagliari.
Around 1200 Masainas (as well as Villarios and Giba, villas belonging to the Giudicato of Cagliari, in the curatoria of Sulcis) was a land of preaching by Benedictine monks who built monasteries (guventus) to which the denomination of the municipal territory still refers today (Su Guventu). The church of San Giovanni Battista is the only monument of particular importance and the first nucleus is now transformed into an "internal chapel". The Gothic-Aragonese influence seems clear and in this case it would go back to 1500 or 1600. Some scholars, however, even speak of the year 1000 or a little later. In this case there would be the influence of the late Romanesque.
Today's inhabited center, initially a medau (farmhouse), which later became a boddeu (group of hamlets), developed around the small church towards the end of the 18th century. In 1820 Masainas was a rather active and rich center for its flourishing agriculture and pastoralism. In fact, thanks to the vast flat and fertile territory, there was a large presence of farmers and shepherds, including those from Nuorese and Iglesiente.
In 1839 Masainas was the largest inhabited center in the area counting 447 families and 1806 inhabitants and which followed the fate of the Marquisate of Palmas entrusted to Gioacchino Bon Crespi di Valdura, the last to boast a noble title on these lands.
