The town is located in a settlement area that shows traces of anthropization since the Bronze Age, as evidenced by the findings in the Schnalserhof area. The toponym is attested as Nocturnis in 1158, as Naturnes in 1182 and as Naturns in 1290 and probably belongs to Pre-Roman origin. The coat of arms shows a golden triangle on a blue background. It is taken from that of the old dynasty of the Lords of Nals who lived in the village until 1380. The coat of arms was granted in 1966.

What see
- 1 Church of San Procolo. It rises about half a kilometer east of the town center, near the current cemetery. Archaeological excavations carried out between 1985 and 1987 have ascertained that the church was founded on the remains of an early medieval house, destroyed by a fire that can be dated - based on a basket earring found among the ashes - to the first quarter of the 7th century.
- The primitive cult building was founded between the 8th and 9th centuries as a stopping point along the Val Venosta which connects the Switzerland With the'Italy.
- Excavations have also uncovered a 17th-century plague cemetery. The bell tower houses two ancient bells of modest size.
- The most valuable work of art is the extraordinarily preserved cycle of frescoes dating back to the Carolingian period (9th century), one of the oldest in the region. There are depicted scenes from the life of San Procolo with archaic features and bright colors. The two-dimensional linearism recalls the synthesis of some miniature scriptoria, such as Kremsmünster and Salzburg, or the Lombard sculpture of the previous century, such as the altar of Duke Ratchis of Cividale.
- Outside the church has a cycle of thirteenth-century frescoes. Most of the very rare Carolingian wall paintings in Europe are concentrated in this Alpine area: a Mals (church of San Benedetto) and, on the Swiss side a Müstair (Monastery of San Giovanni).
- Since 2006, a small adjacent museum has housed a permanent exhibition relating to the church, its finds and its history.
- Gruppo di Tessa Nature Park (Naturpark Texelgruppe), via deiCcampi, 3, ☎ 39 0473 668201.
