background

The place was part of the monastery property of the Benedictines of the monastery on the Holy Cross since the 13th century. In 1351 the place received city rights. In the 14th century the place developed into an important pilgrimage center for the pilgrims who were on their way to the monastery on the Holy Cross. The secularization of the monastery in the 19th century deprived the city of its economic boom. After the Third Partition of Poland in 1795, the place came successively to the Habsburgs, the Duchy of Warsaw and finally to Congress Poland, which was part of the Russian Empire.
