In 2016 four bronze swords were found in the place, which are dated between 1200 and 1050 BC. There was a settlement here as early as the 10th century. The first verifiable documented mention was made in 1277. There was a castle in the village that protected the Polish southeastern border. In 1332 he received city rights. The flourishing of the trading city lasted from the 14th to the 17th century. In 1657, however, the place was sacked by Hungarian troops from Transylvania, from which it should no longer recover. In 1770 there was fighting between Polish insurgents and Russian troops in the vicinity. Also in the First and Second World War there were battles near the place. The war cemetery from the First World War still bears witness to the fighting. In 1942 the Nazis murdered the town's Jewish residents. There is a memorial at the site of the massacre, which killed more than a thousand people. The synagogue Old Szil was destroyed by the Nazis.
