The village Oberpfaffenhofen is located southwest of Munich in Five Lakes Land in Upper Bavaria. The DLR location With eight scientific institutes, Oberpfaffenhofen is one of the largest research centers in Germany.

At the beginning of the history of Oberpfaffenhofen as a technology location are the aircraft of the Dornier brand. The most important company in German aircraft construction employed around 10,000 people in Oberpfaffenhofen at its peak at the beginning of 1980. DLR

The DLR is the research center of the Federal Republic of Germany for aerospace. Research and development work focuses on aviation, space travel, energy and transport. The seat of the board and the main administration is Cologne. The location in Oberpfaffenhofen has the highest number of employees with around 1,600 employees. The focus of the work is, among other things, the participation in space missions (robotics and mechatronics in space), climate research, research and development for earth observation, the expansion of navigation systems and the further development of robot technology.

The DLR has its roots in the aeronautical radio research institute Oberpfaffenhofen FFO, founded in 1937. During the Second World War, radar equipment for the Air Force was built here. After the war, the site was initially closed by the Allies. In 1955 Oberpfaffenhofen was reopened and developed into the most important German location for space travel: in 1969 the institute was expanded to include a space flight control center. In the following 1970s, various satellite missions were carried out under management from Oberpfaffenhofen in cooperation with NASA, which provided the launch vehicles. The two D1 and D2 missions (1985 and 1993), with the Spacelab space laboratory as the European contribution to the American space shuttle, were then directed from Oberpfaffenhofen.

The DLR is also the main contractor for the operation of the Galileo Satellites are in the in-orbit validation phase and are coordinating future operational tasks for Galileo from the Galileo control center in Oberpfaffenhofen together with his newly founded company DLR Gesellschaft für Raumfahrtfahrzeuge (GfR) mbH.

By plane

The nearest commercial airport is Munich Airport (also "Franz Josef Strauss", 59 km, half an hour's drive). Munich Airport can be reached directly from Weßling via the S-Bahn line S8 (see below); the journey from Weßling is scheduled to take around 80 minutes.

Oberpfaffenhofen special airport

Dornier Airport / DLR Airport, too 48.081411.28311 Oberpfaffenhofen special airport(IATA: OBF) is not approved for general passenger air traffic. Rather, Dornier and DLR use it for factory traffic, suppliers and business operations.

By train

The S-Bahn station in nearby Weßling is a stop on line S8 (terminus is Herrsching) of the Munich S-Bahn, connection every 20 minutes directly to the center of Munich (Hauptbahnhof, ZOB - Zentraler Omnibusbahnhof, Marienplatz). Travel time to Munich approx. 40 minutes and approx. 15 minutes to the terminus in Herrsching.

The S-Bahn station is located in the northern part of Weßling and is approx. One kilometer away from the town center in Oberpfaffenhofen and can be reached on foot via Gautinger Str. In around 15 minutes.
