background

The town of Steinebach is the main town on the Wörthsee and is located at the northeastern end of the lake. Walchstadt is located on the north bank of the lake, is directly adjacent to Steinebach and is almost a suburb of Steinebach.

The name Walch in the place name of Walchstadt is traced back to "welsch", the settlement therefore dates back to the pre-Bavarian period.

The oldest traces of settlement for the place Steinebach come from the time of the Celts around 300 to 100 BC. The first written mention as "Steniginpah" comes from the year 920, in the early Middle Ages the region was long under the influence of the Bavarian nobility of the Huosi . Then the owners change via the Andechs-Meraner to the Greifen zu Greifenberg and the Munich patrician family Kazmair.

From the 16th century until 1848, the manor was owned by the Toerrings family with their seat in the neighboring castle Seefeld exercised.

Since the Bavarian regional reform in 1972, Steinebach has formed together with the towns Auing, Etterschlag, Waldbrunn and Walchstadt form the political municipality of Wörthsee.

The beginning for that tourism is the year 1903 with the opening of the railway line from Pasing to Herrsching. The place with the lake changed from a farming and fishing village to a more upscale local recreation destination for the greater Munich area. The main attraction is the beach promenade with the "Sportbad Fleischmann" (today Augustiner am Wörthsee).

A lively cabaret scene has also established itself in Steinebach in recent years.

With a length of approx. 3.5 km, a width of up to 1.7 kilometers and an area of 4.34 km², the lake is the third largest in the Five Lakes Region. The maximum depth is 34 meters, the bank length 9.8 km. The water volume of 63.627 million cubic meters is renewed after approx. 8 years. The origin of the lake has not yet been definitively clarified by science, against the variant as a side arm of the Ammersee speaks the water level of the Wörthsee of 560 meters above sea level. NN. which is well above that of the Ammersee of 532.9 meters. Most likely, the formation is considered to be an independent water accumulation on a moraine.

The expression "Wörth" is derived from Middle High German Werth returned: the word means something like island or bank.

In addition to Steinebach with Walchstadt is also inning represented with its districts Bachern and Schlagenhofen on the west bank of the Wörthsee.

Tributaries are the Auinger Bach, the Bulachbach, the Günteringer Feldbach, the Torf-Mühlgraben and also some underground springs. The Wörthsee is drained by the Inninger Bach, which flows into the from Ammersee coming amper opens.

Thanks to a ring sewage treatment plant, the Wörthsee is one of the cleanest Bavarian baths, the water temperature reaches 22 degrees on average in summer due to the mean depth of only 14 meters, but 25 degrees are easily possible, the Wörthsee is therefore also one of the warmest lakes in the region . Just as the lake heats up quickly in summer, it also freezes over easily in winter and is then very popular with ice sports enthusiasts.

A good three quarters of the entire lake shore are privately owned and not accessible to the public. A small part is closed to the general public for ecological reasons, the following applies here Do Not Enter. They share the rest Lidos. The border on foot or by bike is possible on an approx. 11 km long route mostly on secondary routes and near the lake, but direct access to the lake is often denied.

The Wörthsee is part of the landscape protection area "Western part of the district of Starnberg".

Wörthsee: the Mausinsel in winter, seen from the southwest

The old name for the Wörthsee is also Maussee after the old name Mouse Island for the island in the lake: The official name for the only island is Wörth IslandThe Wörthschlössl, built in 1446, is hidden in the forest on it. The building appeared for the first time in 1446 as the property of the Munich patrician Katzmair; it later served the Counts of Toerring as a summer residence. The small castle with the associated chapel and the island are privately owned and cannot be entered or viewed; like the lake, which is open to the public, they are still owned by the von Toerring family.

A variant of the legend belonging to the island tells that one of the rich lords of Seefeld Castle was once fed up with beggars. The stingy gentleman had them all locked in a barn and then set on fire, he also mocked those who screamed and whimpered in death with the words "do you hear the whimpering of the rats and mice?" The punishment followed immediately: just a short time later, unprecedented hosts of rats and mice appeared, gnawing and destroying everything in his castle. In panic, the lord of the castle fled to the island in Woerthsee, where he believed he was safe, but the animals followed him and only the promise of a charitable foundation for the poor could save the hard-hearted. In another variant, the mice eat the villain.
