Map of Wessling

background

Weßling is an old parish and has belonged to the rulership of since 1248 Seefeld Castle. After the Hofmark Seefeld was dissolved in 1848, Weßling came to the Starnberg district court.

Districts of Weßling are Oberpfaffenhofen, Greensink and Hochstadt.

The most famous resident of the community was the doctor w: Alois Alzheimer Alois Alzheimer (* June 14, 1864 in Market wide † December 19, 1915 in Wroclaw), who discovered and researched the disease named after him. In 1907 he bought the Villa Roiger while working in Munich. On the lakeshore there is the Alzheimergaßl and the "Villa Alzheimer" (the former Villa Roiger).

Weßling sees itself as an "artist village", visitors to the lake were, among others, various well-known sculptors and painters Carl Schuch and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

With favorable transport connections and under the influence of the DLR (German Aerospace Technology) in the nearby district of Oberpfaffenhofen, Weßling developed from a former farming village into a high-tech location for global industrial companies in the second half of the last century.

The historical and also common today Notation for Weßling and the Weßlinger See emerges as a special feature with sharp ß, because here the adaptation according to the new spelling reform (ß after a short vowel is replaced by ss, Part I, § 2, the pronunciation for Weßling would be Wehsling) was not officially carried out for various place names and surnames. Changing the spelling to ss is the exception here and is only practiced in exceptional cases.

Weßlinger See

Panorama Weßlinger See

The Weßlinger See has a length of approx. 0.72 km, a width of 0.24 km, a surface of approx. 0.17 km² with a circumference of approx. 2.5 km and a water volume of 1,047,000 m³. The maximum depth is 12.0 m, the lake level is 592 m above sea level. The lake is the center of the municipality Weßling and the smallest of the five large lakes in the Five Lakes Land.

The Weßlinger See originated as "Lacken", that is a dead ice hole from the last ice age, which filled with water after a huge block of ice, protected from direct sunlight by debris and sand, had melted. The lake has no natural inflows or outflows and therefore has no naturally grown fish population. Attempts with the fish used failed due to the lack of oxygen in the lake.

A few years ago the lake threatened to tip over completely, but thanks to a circular sewer system from 1970 and deep water aeration installed in 1981, the water quality has improved significantly in the meantime. The artificial lung sucks in 3500 m² of air per day and pumps it into the lake, so the small water fountain in the lake level is not a spectator amusement but the guarantee for the bathing water quality grade 1 according to the EU classification.

Because of the risk of over-fertilization of the lake, the following applies to the ducks: Feeding prohibited.

The lake was owned by the Counts of until 1968 Seefeld-Toerring and today belongs to the municipality of Weßling, the purchase price of 200,000 marks at the time was a real bargain.

The immediate lakeshore is not built on, it is possible to circumnavigate it on an approx. 3 km long footpath with several stops for refreshments, the circular path is equipped with information boards for the renaturation of the lakeshore. The lake, fringed by various deciduous trees (beech, maple, aspen, poplar, etc.) becomes particularly idyllic in autumn, when the leaves are colored differently.

Pilgrimage church Grünsink

Greensink

The founding legend of the place of pilgrimage tells that a stray hunter from the nearby Seefeld Castle asked the Blessed Mother for protection from the wolves in the then still wooded region. The hunter then found accommodation with the Schluifeld farmer for the night and put up a portrait of Mary from the farm in a hollow tree in gratitude for the hearing. The place became a place of worship, in 1762 a baroque chapel was built, and a small regional pilgrimage to Grünsink developed.

location: approx. 2 km northwest of Weßling. The Grünsinker Straße to the BAB96 Wörthsee motorway exit is closed to motorized traffic from Grünsink.
