Ostrobothnia (Pohjanmaa or Österbotten in Swedish) is a region of the Finnish west coast.

Ostrobothnia is a region centered around the city of Vaasa on the west coast of Finland. It borders the regions Central Ostrobothnia, Southern Ostrobothnia is Satakunta. The area is dominated by agricultural crops unlike the forests that dominate the hinterland.

Background

Historically Ostrobothnia was hit hard by poor economic conditions and famines during the 19th century and thousands of people left it to emigrate to America.

Spoken languages

Ostrobothnia is the only continental region in Finland that has a slight majority of people speaking Swedish (~ 52%), although some places have a language majority Finnish (the cities of Vaasa and Kaskinen and the municipalities of Laihia, Isokyrö is Vähäkyrö).
