Stelvio National Park is a protected area located between the Lombardy and the Trentino Alto Adige.

To know

It is one of the oldest Italian natural parks. It was born with the aim of protecting the flora, fauna and the beauty of the landscape of the mountain group Ortles-Cevedale, and to promote the development of sustainable tourism in the Alpine valleys of the Lombardy, of the Trentino andSouth Tyrol.

Geographical notes

It extends over the territory of 24 municipalities and 4 provinces and is in direct contact to the north with the Swiss National Park, south with the Adamello-Brenta Natural Park and with the Adamello Regional Park: all these parks, together, constitute a vast protected area in the heart of the Alps, covering almost 400,000 hectares.

Flora and fauna

Flora

Coniferous forests. The most common species is certainly the spruce (Picea abies), groups of silver fir (Abies alba), present above all in Val di Rabbi. Larch (Larix decidua) and stone pine (Pinus cembra), mainly found in Val di Peio. Coniferous woods and a belt of dwarf shrubs. After 2800 meters they find lichens.

Fauna

Deer, chamois, roe deer, ibex, marmots, foxes, stoats, squirrels, hares, and even badgers and weasels. There have been sightings of wolves, lynxes, shag and even bears. Numerous species of birds: the rock partridge, the rock partridge, the coral chough, the raven, the jackdaw, the woodpecker, the black grouse, the mountain francolin, the buzzard, the sparrow hawk, the owl, the golden eagle and, thanks to a successful and valuable reintroduction project, the bearded vulture.

State road 38 dello Stelvio: connects the Valtellina with the Val Venosta across the Stelvio Pass (2758 meters), and then continue in Val d'Adige until you reach Bolzano.
