In a picturesque area, at the junction of three rivers - hence the nickname "City of three rivers" (Ger. Drei-Flüsse-Stadt) - there is a historic city Passau (not M. Passau). It is located in the southeast Germany, in the federal state Bavaria (more specifically Lower Bavaria, i.e. Niederbayern), directly at the border with Austria.

Information

Passau's location is truly unique as it lies on several hills separated by three rivers converging at the foot of the Old Town - the Danube, Inn and Ilz. As a result, the historic Old Town (Altstadt) is located on a narrow, triangular peninsula at the confluence of the Danube (north) and the Inn (south). St. Stefan is standing on a small hill. Due to the significant differences in height, some streets and alleys eventually turn into steep stairs. In the 17th century, architects brought from Italy gave the city a baroque, Mediterranean appearance, hence Passau is often referred to as "Bavarian Venice". We can find here high towers, picturesque squares, romantic riverside boulevards and winding streets as if taken from the Italian Baroque.
Green hills dominate the landscape on the north bank of the Danube and the south bank of the Inn. Both of these banks have their own architectural dominants - the northern one in the form of the Oberhaus fortress, and the southern one in the form of the Sanctuary of Our Lady Help of Christians.

After joining the Inn and Ilz rivers, the Danube waters have three colors in the longer section: green (water from the Inn river - the color is given by the alpine snow melting at the river source), black (water from the Ilz river flowing from peat bogs) and blue (water from the Danube) . The green water from the Inn often flows in a wider stream than the blue water from the Danube. This is mainly due to the smaller depth of the Inn (1.90 m) compared to the Danube (6.80 m).

History

The areas where Passau is situated were first settled by the Celts in the Neolithic period. Even before the reign of the Roman Empire, a stronghold was built here due to its strategic location at the junction of three rivers. Over time, a real city was established here, which in the 8th century became the seat of the bishopric.

Passau was granted city rights in 1225. In the Middle Ages, the Passau bishops were also the rulers of the principality of which the city was the capital. It grew rich on the salt trade with the Czech Republic (salt was mined in Bad Reichenhall near Salzburg). Most of the medieval buildings have survived to this day and are still partly used today.

In modern times, the most important event was the great fire, which took place in 1662. The reconstruction, in which architects mainly from Italy worked, gave the old town a roughly present appearance. The last two hundred years have also been a period of great prosperity in Passau - the development of industry, a railway junction, and the establishment of a university. Luckily, the city was not damaged during World War II.

Today's Passau is associated with architectural monuments, its university and location at the junction of three rivers. This is the last stop before the border with Austria. Like the rest of Bavaria, Passau is Catholic, though few Protestant churches can be found here.

Climate / When to go

The best time to visit Passau is between May and September. Although in July and August we can meet with heat even above 30 ° C, which makes sightseeing difficult. There is rainfall in fall and winter and temperatures drop below freezing.
