It is located in the Lower Lombard plain, in the Cremona countryside near the Delmona canal, on the ancient Via Postumia. 16 km away. from Cremona, 30 from Casalmaggiore.

Background

The place was affected by prehistoric settlements, but the birth of a town in the true meaning of the term was due to the work of Roman colonists after the foundation of Cremona. Subsequently it had to have a Lombard domination, both for its proximity to Sigh, which was an important center of that people, both for the clue that gives us the name of its nearby hamlet, Gazzo. It derives in fact from the Germanic root gad what does it mean fenced forest.

It was a possession of the Bishops of Cremona and was fortified in the twelfth century. The fortress of Gazzo was occupied in 1317 by the future lord of Cremona Ponzino Ponzone and in 1407 it hosted Ugolino Cavalcabò fleeing from Dovarese Island. His Ghibelline opponents attacked and devastated the country.

A century later, always on these lands Rodomonte Gonzaga was defeated by the Venetian troops of Marcantonio Martinengo.

Inside it preserves a valuable mosaic which dates back to the 12th century and which was discovered under the pavement in 1963. The mosaic is of good workmanship, with white, black and pink tesserae, and shows geometric ornaments as well as figures of animals and men (a cow, a shepherd). Over the years further surveys have been carried out to determine the size of the mosaic; it is assumed that, not being of type religious the drawings present, the mosaic could have been the flooring of a domus on which the parish church was later built. Unfortunately (2015) it is not yet visible yet, but it is repaired and covered by wooden planks, waiting for its greater enhancement.
