Geographical notes
The district of Gera is on the right bank of the Adda, the rest of the town on the opposite bank; the two parts that constitute it are surrounded by walls, more intact in Gera, which has better preserved its ancient aspect.
Background
Already inhabited by Etruscan and then Roman populations, Pizzighettone is mentioned in documents starting from the 12th century. It owed to its position on the Adda its constitution as a free village which brought considerable advantages to its trade and its economy. On the other hand, this location was also the cause of dangers as well as armed assaults to obtain its possession in order to control the important river traffic. The country was therefore pushed to equip itself with defensive systems. The original nucleus was equipped with a castle from 1131, which the Cremonese made particularly equipped during the struggles against Milan is Piacenza, struggles that intensified when the Visconti set their sights on the stronghold, finally managing to take it over in 1332.
During the war between Milan is Venice the village was attacked and sacked by the Venetians. Back in Milan, with the Sforza family, a period of prosperity began for Pizzighettone, determined by the rich river trade, thanks to the waterway constituted by the Adda-Po-Mare Adriatico, which made it the gateway for the entry of goods to Milan through the Navigli .
In 1525 the French king Francesco I was defeated in Pavia by the troops of Charles V and subsequently imprisoned in Pizzighettone; this episode is still remembered as the main event in local history. The city fortifications were enlarged in the following century, that of the Spanish domination over the Milanese dukedom, when a further city wall was erected. In fiefdom in 1656 to the Trivulzio, lords of Codogno, from 1735 it entered the dominions of the Austrians until the unification of Italy.
