The Besenhausen manor is an estate in the municipality Friedland in Southern Lower Saxony.

background

The Besenhausen manor is a 700 year old manor with an eventful history, but which is continuously owned by the descendants of the family from Hanstein stayed. The village of Besenhausen, which later fell desolate, was mentioned in a document as early as 1307, the forerunner of today's manor was built in the 16th century. The Hanstein Castle, which is considered the ancestral seat of the von Hanstein family, was no longer safe enough for the residents at that time, which was the decisive factor in building a new residence just 10 km north - now no longer on a ridge above the Werra, but directly on the banks of the Leine in the south Leinebergland.

The first building of the Besenhausen manor was destroyed during the Thirty Years War, but the new building began immediately, partly on the remains of the wall that had been preserved. By 1690, the manor house and the gatehouse were built in the style of the late Renaissance. In 1743 the farm building with the clock tower was built. The other buildings on the current estate were only rebuilt in 1900 after a court fire.

Agriculture is still practiced on the estate, and apartments and event rooms are also rented out. In addition to the entire complex, parts of which can be viewed, the hand-weaving mill with its Scandinavian-inspired products and the courtyard cafe in the old gatehouse are particularly interesting for travelers.

trips

Hanstein Castle

On the continuation of the journey, there is a stop in the neighboring one Friedland to visit the border transit camp and the homecoming memorial.

They are only a few kilometers south Hanstein Castle, from where a hike to Devil's pulpit offers. From high above you have an excellent view of the Werra loop near Lindewerra deep below.

A visit to the 10 km south-west is not only worthwhile during the cherry blossom season Witzenhausen on the Werra, which, despite its small size, is a university town - this is where "organic farming" is taught, which is unique in Germany.

Interesting cities in the area are the university town, which is about 15 km to the north Goettingen, the one about 16 km to the east Heilbad Heiligenstadt and the three-river city about 26 km to the west Hann. Münden.
