Roseto degli Abruzzi is a city ofAbruzzo.

To know

A seaside town of recent birth, it has undergone a lively development from the early decades of the twentieth century to the present day, becoming one of the most important health resorts and seaside resorts on the Adriatic coast of Abruzzo. The tourist promotion of its beaches assigns it the title of Lido delle Rose. It belongs to the group of the so-called seven sisters, the main tourist resorts of the Abruzzo coast.

Geographical notes

Between Vomano to the south and Tordino to the north, Roseto degli Abruzzi stretches along the Adriatic coast and represents the most populous center and reference city of the whole Vomano Valley.

When to go

A seaside resort of primary importance in the region, Roseto is an attractive destination in the summer, from spring to early autumn.

Background

Numerous archaeological finds show that the territory of Roseto degli Abruzzi was already inhabited in Roman times. Mention of the various localities of its territory is already found in numerous documents from the Middle Ages.

The development of the city stems from the construction of the Adriatic railway and the coastal railway station in the second half of the nineteenth century, in the decade of the sixties. The station was called Quotes, a name that recalled the twelve plots of land entrusted to settlers to constitute the first coastal settlement of the then municipality of Montepagano. In the following decades, the increase in population led to the construction of the first church of Santa Filomena and the elementary school. The town in 1887 abandoned the denomination Quotes to take the name of Rosburg (i.e. the country of roses). In 1909 the further increase of the population determined the opening of a registry office, until in 1927 the municipal seat was definitively transferred from Montepagano in Rosburgo, which on that occasion changed its name again, abandoning the never loved Rosburgo (too Germanizing, and reviled especially during the First War) to assume the definitive toponym of Roseto degli Abruzzi. The first industrial initiatives date back to the beginning of the century, the intensification of trade and the development of agriculture, even if tourism has been and continues to be the main resource of the population. The urban development of the city has been consolidated and developed further from then to the present day, in the wake of an ever-increasing tourist demand, but also following a good development of productive activities in the area between the coastal city and the hills. At the 2011 census, the municipality of Roseto degli Abruzzi was the most populous afterwards Teramo, closely followed by the neighbor Giulianova.

How to get around

Adriatic Green Corridor

Italian traffic signs - ciclabile.svg The Adriatic Green Corridor or Adriatic Cycle Route is the cycle path that runs along the Adriatic coast. This path coincides with branch no. 6 of the great national cycle network (BicItalia) proposed by FIAB, the Italian Federation of friends of the bicycle, partly in the design phase and partly already built, which integrates with the wider European cycle network called EuroVelo.

The planned route is the coast road par excellence, it runs parallel to the E55, to the Romea in the central part and to the Adriatica state road in the southern part. It has a length of 1300 km and connects Trieste with Santa Maria di Leuca, along the Italian Riviera with the richest beaches dedicated to seaside tourism.

This very long cycle path crosses all the regions bathed by this coast. At the moment (year 2015) patches of patches have been built, but from year to year the route is increasingly being completed by the municipal, provincial and regional administrations crossed. The region Abruzzo it financed the completion of the entire regional section of competence with an extension of 132 km, ie the entire coast. These works began in March 2015.

Along the Teramo coast there are several sections of the cycle path already completed and others in the completion phase (works started in March 2015 financed by the Abruzzo Region).

South of the Tronto, in the stretch Martinsicuro-Villa Rosa at the moment you cycle mostly on the sidewalk; after the cycle / pedestrian bridge over the Vibrata stream, a long cycle path follows that crosses the towns of Alba Adriatica-Tortoreto Lido-Giulianova-Cologna beach, crossing the cycle / pedestrian bridges over Salinello and Tordino; the track crosses areas with rich vegetation (pine forests, rows of palms and tamarisks). Another active section is in Scerne di Pineto (3 km) and a Pineto (where a stretch of beaten earth develops under the characteristic pine forest).

So the cycle path is almost uninterrupted in the Pescarese-Theatine between Montesilvano, Pescara (where there are some short sections missing and where the Ponte del mare that crosses the Pescara river is in operation) e Francavilla al Mare.

In the southern section, ie along the Coast of the trabocchi, the project for the recovery of a long section of the disused railway is ready Ortona-Vast-San Salvo (about 50 km) in a wild and particular territory. At the moment there is a stretch of cycle path in the towns of Vasto Marina and San Salvo Marina.

Roseto degli Abruzzi (24) - church of Santa Maria Assunta.JPG
  • 1 Church of Santa Maria Assunta, Via Nazionale, 39 085 8990153. Built in the 1870s, when the population of the new settlement had begun to grow, it was dedicated to Santa Filomena. When in the 1960s the Congregation of Rites removed the saint from the calendar, Roseto replaced the church's title, dedicating it to Maria Assunta, who also became the new patroness of the city. Inside it preserves a valuable altar in polychrome wood, with statues of saints and prophets. In its sacristy there is a plaque, which commemorates the birth of Roseto (May 22, 1860), by the clergy of the Church, who divided into lots and gave the marina of which it was owner into leaseholds.
  • Church of S. Antimo. Noteworthy is the bell tower belonging to the church of S. Antimo, linked to a legend that attributes its construction to Pope Sixtus V.

What to do

Roseto is one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Abruzzo coast and offers a stay full of entertainment and attractions, thanks to its beach and sea and modern hotel, recreational and sports facilities. Among the latter, the Palazzetto dello Sport, the tennis courts (also indoor), the skating rink and the recently inaugurated swimming pool.

In addition to bathing activities and water sports, Roseto excels in a competitive activity in which it has achieved national and international fame: the basketball. The city team has been operating since 1946 and in 1997 was promoted to B1, then to A2 to finally move up to the top flight. The Palasport di Roseto, named after the great local basketball player Remo Maggetti, can hold almost 5,000 spectators and one of the largest indoor facilities inAbruzzo. At the center of the city is the Arena 4 Palme, on whose outdoor field basketball is played, the sport that made Roseto famous in the world, with the summer tournament, which in 2006 reached its fifty-fourth edition.

Among the other attractions for the tourist we remember an olive tree, to which more than five hundred years are attributed and a barrel, kept in the cellar of Villa Mazzarosa De Vincenzi which contains one thousand hectoliters of wine, considered the largest in Europe.
