Geographical notes

The natural boundaries of the territory of the municipality are represented by the Saccione stream towards the east and the Biferno river towards the north-west. The Cigno stream, a tributary of the Biferno, which has a much greater flow than the Saccione, also crosses the territory. Other minor waterways are the "Vallone Reale" and the "Vallone Sassani" (left tributaries of the Saccione). In the surrounding flat countryside, wheat, beets, sunflowers are cultivated, as well as olive trees and vineyards. Of the wooded land currently only a few spots remain, remnants of the "Ramitelli wood", which extended along the entire course of the Saccione, from the sea to Rotello. arbëreshë of Portocannone and of Ururi. It is located in the area of Molise coast and is 18 km from Termoli and from Larino, 15 from Guglionesi, 50 from Vast.

Background

A fortified center (castrum Sancti Martini in Pesulo) is attested in documents from the 12th century and was probably built around a church dedicated to the holy bishop Martin of Tours. It had previously been in the possession of the Counts of Loritello (Rotello), but Count Roberto, son of Goffredo d'Altavilla , had donated it toabbey of Montecassino in 1113.

In the chronicles there are no reports of damage to the castrum on the occasion of the great earthquake of 1125, of which Falcone Beneventano speaks. Between 1150 and 1168 the Catalog of the barons attests that a certain "Americ" was lord of San Martino and that the fief was two soldiers (and therefore it was of moderate importance). According to legend, Count Robert II of Bassavilla, lord of Loritello (1154-1182) and Conversano (1138-1182), but rebellious against King William I of Sicily in the years 1155-1169, would have found together with other nobles, during a hunting party, the body of St. Leo. The episode would be at the origins of the traditional event of the chariot race.

Under the dominion of the Angevins, in a statute for the repair of the castles of the Capitanata, drawn up around 1270, in San Martino ("S. Martini impensulis") it was required to contribute to the repairs of the fortress of Tremiti Islands ("castrum insule Tremitane"). In 1381 King Charles III of Naples he assigned it as a fief to his wife, Margherita di Durres, that during the struggles between his son Ladislao and Luigi II of Anjou gave it to Ugolino degli Orsini. It was then in the possession of Queen Giovanna II, daughter of Margherita and was united with the nearby fief of Guglionesi, whose fate it followed.

San Martino probably suffered damage in the earthquake of 1456, which it destroyed Larino and other nearby towns. In 1495 he had it as a fief from Andrea di Capua, Duke of Termoli and then followed the events of the duchy until the abolition of feudalism in 1806.

How to orient yourself

San Martino in Pensilis is the only urban center of the municipality, which does not include hamlets. The historic center is located on a hill that is partly overhanging and very steep towards the south and west sides. The inhabited area extends along the north-west side, less steep and towards the east, along the steep southern side, for a few hundred meters and then bends towards the south and again towards the east.

What see

Count's Palace
Saint Peter
  • Count's Palace (Baronial palace). According to a description of the late sixteenth century, the Count's Palace was originally a real castle, with a drawbridge, battlements and towers. Its ancient appearance would then disappear due to the subsequent subdivisions between the co-owners and subsequent transformations.
  • Church of San Pietro Apostolo. The late Baroque style church has a bell tower on the facade. It was built in place of an older demolished one, in a different position, at the beginning of the eighteenth century and decorated in 1728, on the occasion of the transfer of the body of the patron saint Leo, when it was erected in the Collegiate Church.
The interior (38 m long and 12 m wide, for a height of 16 m) has six altars on the sides decorated in stucco with paintings, the result of a single intervention. The body of St. Leo was placed under the main altar.
A Roman funerary inscription was inserted into the façade which was previously reused as a step. In 1893 it suffered damage from a fire caused by lightning, including the destruction of a painting by Niccolò Melanconico depicting the Virgin adored by local protectors.
