background
The first traces of settlement are dated to the Hallstatt period (750-450 BC), evidence of Roman settlement is a Roman villa with bathing facilities from the 3rd century AD that was uncovered in the south of Schondorf in 1924. Ober- and Unterschondorf were in the Middle Ages Fishing and farming villages with changeable ownership: first they belonged to the Bavarian nobility of the Huosi family, then to Dießen-Andechs and then to the Augustinian canons Thesebefore the places to the monastery Andechs arrived. From 1507 Ober- and Unterschondorf were part of the Hofmark Greifenberg. The independent communities emerged after the secularization in the community edict of 1818.

The current political municipality of Schondorf was created in 1970 through the merger of the previously independent municipalities of Ober- and Unterschondorf, but the different character of the two places is still clearly recognizable.
Oberschondorf is visible from afar on a hill above the lake and with its old farmhouses still has the character of a village.
Unterschondorf is the district directly on the lakeshore, here many villas and modern bungalows have been created in addition to the fishermen's houses.
The tourism takes place predominantly in Unterschondorf and with "only" approx. 25,000 overnight stays annually does not have the same significance as in the neighboring towns on the Ammersee.
Known as Artist residence is Schondorf by the painter Wilhelm Leibl (wikipedia: Wilhelm Leibl), other names are Hans Pfitzner (composer), Berthold Brecht (often as a holiday guest, wikipedia: Berthold Brecht) and Heinz Rose (painter).
