small historical outline of the monastery history:

west front of the monastery

A first monastery was built around the year 815 west of today's complex, but was soon destroyed again. The re-establishment of the Augustinian canons' monastery in 1132 was strategically more favorable at its current location on a hill above the lake, with origins of the monastery foundation in the monastery Grafrath.

In the Middle Ages, the monastery experienced an eventful history with several destruction. It was important as the burial place of the saints and blessed of the Dießen-Andechs house, the house of the monastery. The current building complex was built for the 600th anniversary of the monastery from 1732 under the master builder Johann Michael Fischer from the Upper Palatinate. Head of the monastery was Probst Herculan, who followed several art trips innsbruck and Bolzano undertook to find the best craftsmen and artists for his building project in the centers of art at that time. The 34 m high façade on the west side, created by master builder Fischer, is one of the most perfect church fronts in Bavaria.

In 1803 the monastery was dissolved in the process of secularization. The monastery buildings were partially demolished, the remainder is the parsonage or since the end of the First World War in the possession of the Sisters of Mercy. The holdings of the monastery library followed Munich in the Bavarian State Library and in the University library.
