Scuol is a community in Lower Engadine in the very east of the canton Grisons, it is traversed by the Innthat drains into Tyrol. The Tyrol and also the Italian South-Tirol via the Reschenpass are reached faster than the canton capital of Graubünden.
With the merger of the previously independent Lower Engadine communities, confirmed by a referendum Ardez, Ftan, Guarda, Sent and 1 Tarasp The large community of Scuol was established on January 1, 2015, which thanks to the many side valleys is not only the largest community in Switzerland, but also one of the largest communities with a Romansh-speaking population with 4,600 inhabitants.
The place is divided into two districts, the upper village (Scuol Sura) and the lower village (Scuol Sot). The small hamlet also belongs to the municipality of Scuol 2 S-Charl in the Val S-charl. In winter this can only be reached by sledge, in summer a post bus runs into the hiking area.

Bronze Age settlement traces were found on the church hill during excavations. Scuol was first mentioned in a document as Schulle in 1095 in connection with the construction of a Benedictine monastery, which was built in 1089/90 and became the mother monastery of Marienberg Abbey in Vinschgau; only in 1652 could this happen Lower Engadine ransom from Austria.
The first Carolingian church burned down in 1258, the Romanesque successor building was replaced by the Gothic church of San Geer (St. Georg), which still exists today and was consecrated in 1516. In 1530 the Reformation was introduced in Scuol and a little later in the whole of the Lower Engadine. As early as 1659 a printing works was established in Scuol, in which in 1679 the "Bibla da Scuol" was printed in Romansh.
From 1499 the Engadin was repeatedly devastated as part of the Swabian Wars against the troops of Habsburg King Maximilien I, who were pillaging the valley, and later in the Thirty Years' War.
From the 14th century Bleierz was mined in S-Charl, the majority of the population lived from agriculture and was often forced to emigrate when the harvests were poor. Many Engadines found a livelihood in nearby Italy as confectioners or merchants. Around 1860 the road through the Engadin and in 1866 the one over the Flüelapass to Davos The first hotels were built in Scuol, Tarasp, Nairs and Vulpera from 1860 and tourism led to an economic boom in the valley. In a village fire in 1877, most of the old houses in the Clozza district fell victim to the fire. The first winter season opened in 1950/51, and in 1956 the development of the winter sports resort began with the construction of the first mountain railway. The mineral springs are the reason for the importance of Schuls-Tarasp as a health resort.
Scuol has changed its name several times since the last century. Until 1943 the community was officially called Schuls, then until 1970 the place was called Bad Scuol / Schuls, since 1970 only Bad Scuol and since 1999 the official place name is Scuol.

By plane
Most guests travel via the international airport Zurich(IATA: STR) at. On the 1 Samedan Airport (Engadin Airport) only private air traffic is handled.
By train
To travel by public transport, take from Zurich coming here the SBBConnection up Landquart and then climbs onto the red narrow-gauge railway of the Rhaetian Railway St. Moritz around. Usually you take the winter-proof connection through the Vereina tunnel. The Vereina tunnel reaches at Sagliains the Lower Engadine. You can take the regional train without having to change trains Scuol in an hour and a half.
At the 2 Scuol-Tarasp railway station the line of the Rhaetian Railway ends in the Lower Engadine; from Scuol there are postbus routes leading to the various valleys.

The best way to get to Scuol is via the Prättigau and the car transport through the Vereina tunnel. You leave the autobahn at Landquart and takes the
in the direction Davos. The car transporter is used in wintry conditions Monastery through the Vereina tunnel and arrives at Sagliains in Engadine. On the main street
then it goes on to Scuol.
The toll-free route (no costs for the car transport) via the Flüela Pass above Davos to Susch is usually blocked in winter.
Of Austria the Engadine came from that Tyrol reachable: The Arlberg motorway is at Landeck leave over Pfunds and Martina you reach the Swiss border.
