Events and parties

  • The Infiorata of Spello (Infiorata of Spello). The Infiorata of Spello takes place every year to coincide with the feast of Corpus Domini. It is a traditional event that consists in preparing carpets made with flowers or parts of them represented figurations and liturgical ornamental motifs, in a large city festival that usually takes place at the beginning of June.
The tradition of the Infiorata was born in Rome in the first half of the seventeenth, an expression of a baroque festival to celebrate Catholic worship. Benedetto Drei, head of the Vatican Floreria, allowing himself to be helped by his son, designed and created floral carpets that recalled the mosaics on the occasion of the June 29 feast of Saints Peter and Paul. From there the festivals spread outside Rome and the first Infiorata celebrating Corpus Domini dates back to the end of the 1700s.
It arrived in Spello around 1930 when a lady from the town drew a figure made of broom and fennel on the street, which immediately won the acclaim of the other villagers. Since then it was decided to create a positive challenge with families and expert florists to create more complex works in the total celebration of Christ, a baroque party, in fact, made of colors and emotions, to be carried around the splendid village medieval.
Since then we have been working at the Infiorata for the whole year, choosing the subjects, the materials that must be only vegetable and floral with a preparation of weeks that is, however, completed with fresh flowers in the space of a single night. Each year there are about two kilometers of carpets that branch out through the streets and alleys of the city, in an evocative show of great devotion and great imagination.
