The city is bordered to the east by the River Rhine which also marks the border with the region of Baden-Württemberg
Background
It is one of the oldest German cities and has a beautiful old town. Spira has been a diocesan city since 346; its first churches and monasteries were built in the 6th and 7th centuries.
The first stone of the imperial cathedral was laid in 1030 by Conrad II, emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and first of the Salian dynasty. The cathedral is the resting place of the Salian dynasty. It was largely destroyed in the Great Alliance War in 1689.

By car
Speyer is located south of the A61 motorway.
On the train
- 1 Spira Centrale station. The main station has frequent connections with Mannheim, Ludwigshafen is Karlsruhe, although it is not directly connected to the ICE high-speed rail network. There is a ticket office at the main station (closed on weekends and public holidays).
- Speyer has rail connections to Germersheim and Karlsruhe (via Heidelberg) every 30 minutes and express trains to Karlsruhe and Mainz every 2 hours.
- 2 north-west Speyer station.
How to get around
By public transport
Spira has a city bus system. You can buy tickets from the drivers. The city shuttle (line 565) costs only € 1 and is valid for 1 day on this bus line only. Speyer also has regional bus connections with villages without a train connection.
If you want to go to the Technical Museum, IMAX Dome cinema or Sealife you can get a combined ticket. This ticket is valid for the round trip by train to Speyer, bus line 565 and admission to the Technical Museum or IMAX Dome or Sealife cinema. Ask at the train station ticket office. They have it for individuals, groups or families. The same offer is possible for the Sinsheim technical museum and the IMAX Dome Sinsheim cinema.

This museum exhibits aircraft (airplanes and helicopters) and naval vehicles, locomotives, vintage cars and motorcycles, various types of engines and mechanical parts, as well as musical instruments. The halls are full of old cars and outside are a number of planes and a small submarine that you can enter. The space exhibition which also includes the Russian shuttle.
- 4 Judenbad (Jewish Mikvah), Kleine Pfaffengasse 22, ☎ 49 6232 291971. Mon-Sun 10: 00-17: 00. Jewish ritual bath, one of the oldest north of the Alps.
- 5 Altpörtel (Ancient gate of Speyer), Maximilianstraße 55, ☎ 49 6232 142392. A 55 m high gate, part of the former fortification wall of the city. There are opening hours for visits.
- 6 Gedächtniskirche der Protestation (Protestant church), Bartholomäus-Weltz-Platz 5, ☎ 49 6232 74327. A Protestant church with a 17th century wooden interior
- 7 Sealife, Im Hafenbecken 5, ☎ 49 6232 69780. Mon-Fri 10: 00-17: 00. Sat-Sun 10: 00-18: 00. A not very large but interesting aquarium. However, there can be a long line of people at peak times.
