Background

It is one of the oldest German cities and has a beautiful old town. Spira has been a diocesan city since 346; its first churches and monasteries were built in the 6th and 7th centuries.

The first stone of the imperial cathedral was laid in 1030 by Conrad II, emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and first of the Salian dynasty. The cathedral is the resting place of the Salian dynasty. It was largely destroyed in the Great Alliance War in 1689.

  • 1 Spira Centrale station. The main station has frequent connections with Mannheim, Ludwigshafen is Karlsruhe, although it is not directly connected to the ICE high-speed rail network. There is a ticket office at the main station (closed on weekends and public holidays).

How to get around

By public transport

Spira has a city bus system. You can buy tickets from the drivers. The city shuttle (line 565) costs only € 1 and is valid for 1 day on this bus line only. Speyer also has regional bus connections with villages without a train connection.

If you want to go to the Technical Museum, IMAX Dome cinema or Sealife you can get a combined ticket. This ticket is valid for the round trip by train to Speyer, bus line 565 and admission to the Technical Museum or IMAX Dome or Sealife cinema. Ask at the train station ticket office. They have it for individuals, groups or families. The same offer is possible for the Sinsheim technical museum and the IMAX Dome Sinsheim cinema.
